I love seeing the images online of people putting their gardens to bed and preserving the fruits of the labours. Tomatoes, raspberries, beans and potatoes, squash and peppers.... even flowers creating colourful displays. Jams and preserves and beautiful bouquest are all being prepared for us to enjoy a little longer, maybe even through the entire winter.
VISHNU is the preserver, and his femine counterpart LAKSHMI represents the energy of being provided for... provisions of health, financial stability, food - whatever it is that we need. The bounty we have been provided is preserved for as long as we are able to make it last. Even beyond our gardens of fruit, vegetables and flowers, we plant seeds to provide for ourselves. If we nurture our health by eating well and exercising regularly, it can result in a healthier body and mind. If we seek help when our system is out of balance, it can result in health returning. We are constantly in a cycle of preserving what we need.
Let's take a moment and assess how we are being provided for and how we preserve those provisions. Often we discover there is more than we actually expected to find. No matter how small it may appear at first, try to see how fortunate you are to have whatever it is you have cultivated.
It is often said that the more we give, the more we receive. Cultivating the garden reflects this. May you tap into all the good fortune that has been sent your way, and may you find it in your heart to pass on some of that good fortune to another.

Matsyasana- The Story of Manu and Matsya
We know that yoga asana is a powerful tool for creating vital health in the body and the mind. When we learn the stories and lessons that underlie the asanas, this symbolic energy strengthens the yoga posture to uplift and concentrate the mind upon the divine lesson it embodies. This takes our asana practice beyond the body and mind, and into the realm of wisdom!
In "The Stories Behind the Poses", Dr. Balkaran shares the mythology of Matsyasana. This story is of the first incarnation of Vishnu, the Preserver. Read more...

Matsyasana (Fish Pose) A Modified Variation
Matsyasana” means Fish pose in Sanskrit. It is a back-bending pose that opens the chest, neck and shoulder muscles. Backbends, like fish pose, can relieve the back pain from sitting all day at your desk or in your car. Matsyasana and all of the gentle variations increase spinal flexibility and help to improve your posture. Back-bending poses are great for digestion and metabolism because of the stimulation of the thyroid and toning of the abdomen. They also open up space for your heart, both physically and energetically.
