"DUCKS is back in stock at RT HQ and I just re-read my copy this weekend because I was supposed to see Kate Beaton at Wordfest in Calgary on Monday. After seeing the road and weather reports I was faced with that familiar Albertan choice: To Highway 2, or not Highway 2.

I decided not risk it after seeing conditions worsen. As a result I had an impactful conversation with my friend (that I was going to travel with) who really connected with the themes in DUCKS because their experience working in the oil sector was of unsafe conditions in high demand situations which was ultimately dehumanizing. By prioritizing our safety, we prioritized our humanity.

Beaton's experience working up north is told with a matter-of-fact compassion that will stay with you. You might want a lighter read after, for which I also highly recommend her comic strip Hark! A Vagrant!"
