My blue collages have a tactile presence, both in their rich color and their visible stitches. I view a lot of these collages as broken shards, or sharp pieces that I’ve gathered up and arranged in a new way. Repetitive themes within my work are rounded arches, rainbows, and niches which reference shields or protection. I’ve been playing with these shapes as I think about my son. As a mother, I’m wielding my shield to protect him from monsters, both real and imagined. Many of my collages involve hand-dyed paper and stitches from my sewing machine. I am a maker, a mender, and a quilter. These paper collages often times resemble quilted blocks; quilts, for me, symbolize love, care, and touch.

Amanda Crary lives in Watertown, WI, which is between Madison and Milwaukee. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art and Curator of Galleries and Collections at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. She received her BFA and MA from Minnesota State University, Mankato and her MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Amanda is a mixed-media artist. She makes paintings, collages, cyanotypes and works on paper. Much of her current work explores themes of motherhood and the tumultuous but beautiful world.

Women + Water: A Global Exhibit to Open at the Center for the Visual Arts

Wausau, Wisconsin – The Center for the Visual Arts is proud to host an exhibit by acclaimed weaver and fiber artist Mary Burns. Women + Water: A Global Exhibit opened this week in the CVA Vault Gallery on the 400 Block in Wausau and will run through the end of the year. Burns returns to the CVA galleries weaving images and education into her newest body of work.

This exhibit highlights women who work with, protect, and advocate for water from around the world. This includes several women from Wisconsin who have played a role in our relationship with water. Indigenous women and women of color from around the world are featured to draw attention to their work advocating for the protection of water resources. Prominent women in the sciences, and limnology specifically, are also featured. These incredible weavings have taken years to complete with the use of a unique jacquard loom.

“It’s giving voice to these women,” Burns quoted in a recent article about her work in the Wisconsin State Journal. “And they’re just a small fraction of the women who are doing just amazing work.”

The CVA will be the first art gallery to show this exhibit before it travels to other venues in the state, the country and around the world. The body of work is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board and the National Endowment of the Arts. In addition, the CVA would like to thank UMR for their sponsorship of the Vault Gallery.

A reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, from 5 - 7 p.m. for this show and other new exhibits that opened earlier this month. At 5:45 p.m. during the reception in the Vault Gallery, artist Mary Burns and exhibit subjects, Tinker Schuman and Gretchen Gerrish, will be speaking. On Saturday, Dec 3, at 1 pm, Mary Burns will be giving an artist talk in the Classroom Studio of the CVA followed by a gallery walkthrough of her exhibition.

BRIAN DIVIS:
IN HIGH REGARD
OPENS NOVEMBER 12th @ OS PROJECTS
Devotion by Brian Divis, 2022.

Racine, Wisconsin - OS Projects presents In High Regard, an exhibition featuring mixed media works by Chicago artist Brian Divis. The exhibition opens November 12, 2022 and continues through January 14, 2023. An artist reception will take place on Saturday, November 12, from 1 – 3 pm.

In High Regard explores issues surrounding domesticity, gender, reverence and material tradition.  The works in the exhibit are constructed from fibrous textiles, such as yarn, coated with metal and graphite powders. The materials pay homage to the artist’s rural Midwestern background, situated between a loving mother skilled in the craft of sewing and a labor-driven father who worked at the local wire and steel mill.

By combining craft-associated and industrial materials and destabilizing their tactile perceptions, Divis creates surfaces worthy of reverence while complicating the relationship between sculpture, painting, gravity and light. Through a process of revealing and concealing, the cultural, spiritual and art historical status of the objects and their materials are brought into question, while their gendered histories are reimagined.

As he transforms the conventional associations and perceptions of his materials and objects, Divis creates new aesthetic frames of reference that foster awareness of the forces at play in the formation of absolutes and stereotypes--advocating for acceptance and empathy over judgement and animosity. The goal, the artist states, is for the objects to emerge with a thick presence that prompts viewers to reconsider their socially constructed beliefs about the things often held in high regard.
