On Our Knees

Written by Jodi

Recently, I have been convicted that I need to spend more time in prayer. Specifically,

for people. God confirmed this early on by giving us several things we needed without even having asked. (Our Father knows what we need before we ask Him, Matt. 6:8). Several months ago, we ran into a former teacher of mine out walking one day and she shared with us how she was prayer walking. A few days later she dropped off a package with a set of Bible promise cards and blank prayer cards for us and the kids. It kicked off a new way to organize my prayers and I began claiming God’s promises for people instead of just making requests. The way we speak affects the way we think and the same rings true with prayer. When we focus on what God can do instead of what we as humans can’t do, we believe with greater conviction those things which HE CAN DO!
Let me give you a simple example. I am praying for some people that struggle with anxiety. So instead of praying “Lord, please take away their anxiety,” I claim a promise for them such as “Great peace have they that love your law (Ps. 119:165) – Lord, please give them Your peace,” or “thank you for giving them the strength to ‘cast all their cares on You because You love them (1Pet 4:7).’”
In a newly published book “In the Spirit and Power,” Pavel Goia shares about two different kinds of prayer: petition prayer and intercessory prayer. Petition prayer is when you ask God for a temporal need or want, accompanied by a “Your will be done,” and a trust that God has heard and will answer accordingly. Intercessory prayer is persistent prayer for someone’s salvation and their walk with the Savior. The bulk of our prayers should be the latter, praying for people. And claiming Bible promises for what God can do in these people’s lives grows our faith. Each time we pray, a door is opened allowing the heavenly beings to move in some way. A series of these seemingly small ways leads to great things only accomplished by God through prayer. Goia writes, “…answer to prayer is not an event but a process” (pg.120). We must persevere in intercessory pray UNTIL something happens! It's changing me and it can change you too.

Who will you begin to pray for today?

THE NEED FOR EVANGELISM

Written by Ana

Four months after arriving in Independencia, I felt a growing need to do more evangelism in the surrounding communities. Our plans never came to fruition and that left me feeling discouraged.

Every year, the Adventist Church in Bolivia holds a program against domestic violence called BASTA EL SILENCIO (Enough of/Stop the Silence). This year a Ladies’ Tea was included. Here in Independencia, the church had never held a program like this before. As we began to organize the event, I prayed for at least 10 ladies to attend. We invited ladies from church and asked them to invite their friends as well. God far exceeded my expectations and we had a big turnout, including about 30 from the community! I was very encouraged.

From there I began to trust more and pray more, believing that nothing is impossible for God. I lost my fear of evangelizing in the area and God began to open the doors for more opportunities. He opened the doors of a local school, working with the students in the area of emotional health. God opened the doors of a Catholic Radio Station, allowing us to transmit a health program several times a week that reaches into many different communities. Though I don’t know the next chapters of this story, I trust that God will continue to open more doors for the salvation of souls.

YOUTH INVOLVEMENT

Written by Luz

When I began to attend church in Independencia, I noticed many young people. Getting them to participate in anything was difficult, but we managed to have a regular youth Sabbath school class and also a Friday evening worship. Little by little more youth joined. Then after a while, involvement began to decrease again. There was a struggle in my mind as to why? So I began to pray.

I watched as God answered those prayers for the youth through various church activities. First, it was the Ladies’ Tea and then the health fair even more so. Though the Health Fair was something new for them, they still gave it their best effort, overcame their shyness and fears and participated in sharing what they’d learned about health. They were able to explain things more easily in their first language (Quechua) and you could see the joy on their faces! Not only the youth, but other church members also came out to help sweep the plaza, invite others and leave their stores/sales for the day to support the health fair.

At the end of that day, there was only gratitude in my heart. God surprised me and all of us as a team. Seeing the young people and church members involved was our greatest desire and prayer. I thank God for everything He did and will do in the future. His plans are always perfect.

AN EXPERIENCE TO STRENGTHEN

Written by Elizabet

Two months ago, I sincerely prayed that God would strengthen my spiritual life because I felt that I was stagnant. I asked God give me an experience that would teach me to completely trust and depend on Him. A week later, I woke up with severe pain and inflammation in my mouth due to a tooth infection. I traveled quickly to Cochabamba and saw a doctor. The results showed a cyst, requiring immediate surgery. I was scared and asked God to provide everything I needed, including just the right surgeon. I then traveled to Santa Cruz where I found a good doctor who performed the needed (and successful!) surgery.

With this experience I can say that God answers our sincere prayers when we place ourselves in His hands. He knows how to answer prayer! Looking back after difficult experiences allows us to see God’s purpose and His very special plan for our lives. He is always with us. God supplied EVERYTHING I needed and this experience helped me to better trust and completely depend upon my Heavenly Father. I was able to see and experience a real God in my life, a God who is close to me, concerned about my every need and who loves me with an everlasting love. Praised be His Name!

CHRIST'S METHOD ALONE

Written by Wilson

I arrived at my mission post in Kami, a mining center, earlier this year and was introduced as a Bible worker. At first, I felt challenged by my role in giving Bible studies with the purpose of planting a church in the Kami village.

Two weeks into my stay I began to worry because I didn't want to be just a Bible worker. I had studied for two years at the Health Evangelism School (IQL) learning natural therapies, nutrition, healthy cooking, and massages and I wanted to incorporate these into my work here. I prayed a lot about how to work in Kami and the thought came to mind that Christ's method is the only one that will give us success in approaching people.

I asked God for wisdom in helping me put this method into practice and He answered my prayer. God sent Roger and Andrés on temporary leave from IQL. After praying and studying how we could meet the people’s physical needs first in order for their hearts to be receptive to spiritual things, the doors began to open. Two miners’ associations gave us permission to give health talks. Between this and the opportunities the other Bible workers are having through the radio ministry in Independencia, we met several people in the mining communities that we began visiting and doing natural therapies for.

By the grace of God, we recently began a Bible study group and classes with the youth in Kami-Listeria. Thank you for praying for this little group to know Jesus as their Savior as well as for God to send me another Bible work partner since the Roger and Andrés have returned to IQL.
