WISE Safety Walk for Women

During this past month, we invited folks to take a walk in their neighborhood noticing any features that made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.  At the same time, it was a fundraiser and we want to thank everyone who contributed and we appreciate your support! Just a couple of items we’ve heard about, WISE has been alerted about some areas in the downtown where folks feel unsafe as they travel to catch the LRT and another person referenced some shootings in the Orleans area this fall which have unnerved residents. WISE will be following up on any safety issues identified during the walkathon.

Thank you to our generous sponsors Headquarters Hair parlor, Erin Whyte RMT and Algonquin College. We’ll be naming prize winners soon.

Women on Wheels (WOW) session

Were you one of the women who took part in our WOW workshops this summer?  Or, have you participated in previous workshops?  Wel,, this online workshop is dealing with negotiations when dealing with getting your vehicle serviced; or, when you are out to purchase a vehicle. It a bit of a skill to negotiate. Want to fine tune your negotiating skills? Then this is your chance. Register at elsydavid@wiseottawa.ca and let us know if you are available and interested on the evening of November 10 at 6:30. We’ll send you the link to participate. We can’t wait to meet you there.
WISE eyes on the municipal election

Well, the municipal election is behind us and we have a new Mayor and 11 new councillors.  All of the incumbents who put their name forward for reelection were returned. But we have some new folks at the council table. It looks as if we have 8 women councillors.  Welcome to all the newbies who are learning the ropes as we speak and will soon be available to dialogue with you on your pressing municipal issues.

Planning for December 6 vigil

Just a few short weeks until we all gather again at the Women’s Monument in Minto Park to remember all of those women who have died over the past year. This all began in 1989 when the 14 young women were murdered at the école Polytechnique in Montreal when a gunman separated the female students out and shot them – just because they were women. This year our vigil on December 6 will be remembering women from our own area like ann-Marie ready, Jasmine Ready, Chantale Lebrun, Yu Kun Xie, Sahur Yare, Jordana Yakabuskie, Florence matila o’Ray, Marie Gabriel and Savanna Pikuyak. Such tragic stories and femmicides that must be acknowledged and addressed. This violence against women needs to stop! Join us and raise your voice and lend your support.  We are also highlighting missing and murdered Indigenous women from our community for over 30 years. We all need to work on this societal problem. It’s not just a women’s issue.  These women that are killed are our family members, moms, daughters, aunts, cousins grandmothers and neighbours.
