RDA DMP Common Standards WG Webinar | Integrating Research Data Management Services using maDMPs, 22 November 2022

« This webinar, presented by the RDA DMP Common Standards WG, will familiarize participants with the RDA recommendation on machine-actionable DMPs. It will present an overview of existing adoptions and will provide information on how using the recommendation can help to automate typical tasks in data management and reduce the workload for everyone involved in this process.
We will explain the difference between traditional DMPs and explain in short the motivation and the development process of the recommendation. The webinar will also discuss how to read and interpret the recommendation, e.g. what design decisions were made and why, but it will not go into the details. For this reason, it is suitable for everyone who is new to this topic, as well as for those who want to systematize their existing knowledge on this topic. We will discuss how the DMP tools adopt the recommendation and what other adoption scenarios are possible. We will also highlight ongoing work within the community. (…) »

« La revue Cambouis a adopté le modèle économique Diamant de science ouverte, soit celui d’un accès ouvert dont le financement ne repose ni sur les auteurices, ni sur les lecteurices. Dans ce cadre, son projet s’inscrit dans une réflexion sur les conditions de circulation de la science sous forme éditée (la « publication ») ainsi que sur les liens entre l’infrastructure technique des plateformes d’édition et de diffusion et les possibilités qu’elles offrent à l’écriture en SHS. Ce projet – puisqu’il n’en est qu’à sa version ß – articule ainsi trois niveaux : le choix d’une chaîne d’édition structurée (Métopes) adoptant la nomenclature d’encodage JATS [partie 1], le choix d’une plateforme d’exposition (OJS) capable d’embarquer des formats de documents variés (au-delà des images et des tableaux) [partie 2], le choix d’un plugin de visualisation (eLens) adapté aux usages de lecture spécifiques (au moins) aux SHS, où les résultats, les illustrations et les interprétations ne sont pas dissociables [partie 3]. « Data is one of the most used terms in scientific vocabulary. This article focusses on the relationship between data and research by analyzing the contexts of occurrence of the word data in a corpus of 72,471 research articles (1980–2012) from two distinct fields (Social sciences, Physical sciences). The aim is to shed light on the issues raised by research on data, namely the difficulty of defining what is considered as data, the transformations that data undergo during the research process and how they gain value for researchers who hold them. « Since 2019 the TRIPLE project has been developing the multilingual discovery platform GoTriple, aiming to facilitate interdisciplinary research and foster collaboration. The platform provides a central access point for users to explore, find, access and reuse Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) materials at European scale (data and publications, researcher’s profiles, projects). Users can find appropriate resources to support their own research and develop collaborative and interdisciplinary projects: different innovative tools are plugged to the platform to enhance the overall user experience. Data are automatically and continuously harvested with the active support of a vocabulary containing 11 languages for both resources and classification capabilities. « La session plénière des Journées aura lieu le 25 novembre, avec le matin une introduction sur les activités du CNRS sur les données (Sylvie Rousset), et des présentations de l’actualité Science Ouverte (Isabelle Blanc), de celle des Services et Infrastructures Numériques (Xavier Engels), des activités de la RDA (Hilary Hanahoe) et de RDA France (Francoise Genova), et l’après-midi des présentations des activités de Groupes de Travail et de Groupes d’Intérêt de la RDA dans lesquels des collègues qui travaillent en France sont particulièrement impliqués et des exemples d’adoption des méthodes et produits de la RDA.

COAR Announces first recommendation for supporting multilingual and non-English content in repositories

« Multilingualism is a critical characteristic of a healthy, inclusive, and diverse research communications landscape. The Helsinki Initiative on Multilingualism in Scholarly Communication asserts that the disqualification of local or national languages in academic publishing is the most important – and often forgotten – factor that prevents societies from using and taking advantage of the research done where they live.

While the dominant position of a lingua franca – English – is useful for the widespread dissemination of ideas across the world, it also impedes the use of research results at the local level. And after decades of policies that have directed researchers to publish in English, we are beginning to see a reversal of this trend. The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, for example, calls on member states to encourage “multilingualism in the practice of science, in scientific publications and in academic communications”.
