Welcome to the November 2022 edition of Imagine Norfolk Together's news and prayer letter (Great Yarmouth).

It's been a while since I've sent out a newsletter, but I'm still here and pleased to hear from you or support you if I can! Please ring me on 07471 357072 or email me at anna.heydon@togethernorfolk.org.uk

This newsletter is produced to share how local churches are at work in the community, and to provide you with resources which will help you in your own  community activities.

Unsurprisingly, the focus of this month's newsletter is the cost of living crisis and rising energy costs.

Anna Heydon

Cost of Living Crisis
It's impossible to ignore the cost of living crisis which is engulfing our nation. The Citizens Advice have started releasing statistics about the advice and support being requested from them which demonstrate the rising and changing struggles people are facing. You can keep up to date with those statistics here.

On a more local level, NCAN (Norfolk Community Advice Network) have issued a public letter declaring a 'Cost of Living Emergency' based on the unsustainable rise in demand for crisis and support services. You can read their letter here.

Various organisations have produced guides to help individuals and organisations find help during this time, and I've put links to the ones provided by the Church of England, Healthwatch Norfolk, and  Norfolk Association of Local Councils (NALC) below.

Food Provision
With the cost of living rising steeply, the number of people struggling to afford the basics such as food is also increasing.

Last newsletter I highlighted the new community supermarkets including 'Sally's Store.' But there is also ongoing need for free emergency food for those who are in crisis. Below you can find links to a current list of free hot meals provided by churches, and also an up to date list of the local foodbanks, including the new one in Caister.

Warm Welcome
Of course a major element of the cost of living crisis is the rising cost of energy.

Many churches and other community organisations have already begun to open up their buildings for people to come and be warm if they are struggling to afford to pay for heating themselves. The coalition "Warm Welcome" is providing a useful map of where these spaces are. If you are one of the groups providing a place which is free, warm, welcoming and safe, you can log it here, If you are looking for a warm place you can find it on the map.

The Living Room Part 2

One of the benefits of being a smaller charity is the ability to adapt and change according to local needs and resources. The Living Room is doing just that.  Having started out as a nightshelter in 2017, The Living Room is now expanding its vision. You can read more about it in the attached document and on the website.

Where is your treasure?

(First featured in Great Yarmouth Mercury, October 2022)

I’ve never particularly enjoyed supermarket shopping; but over these past few months that disinterest has sometimes turned to panic, as my eyes scan the spiralling prices of basic food items. Can sliced bread really cost that much? How has the price of milk gone up so dramatically in the last week? Where will it all end?
