2023 Seed Grants in Rural Education
The Center for Rural Education is accepting applications for seed grants up to $6,000 to foster broad involvement across Virginia Tech to engage in scholarship designed to support the overall health and wellness of rural schools and communities. Topics of interest may include policy and funding; health and wellness; partnerships and community relationships; teacher and leader preparation, recruitment and retention; college and career trajectory; or spatial and educational equity. Reimagine Approaches to Multilateralism and U.S. Foreign Policy
Carnegie Corporation of New York has launched a request for proposals for projects addressing one or both of the following themes: reimagining multilateral approaches to global challenges, and connecting domestic concerns with U.S. national security and foreign policy making. Projects are highly encouraged to: involve collaborations among American and foreign experts; involve collaborations among experts on U.S. foreign policy and domestic policy; include participation by experts from underrepresented communities; and demonstrate leadership by mid-career experts. Early Career Interdisciplinary Scholars Fellowship Program
The Society for Research in Child Development established the Early Career Interdisciplinary Scholars Fellowship for early scholars in relevant fields outside of psychology/human development to gain exposure to developmental theory and research and to provide them with a mentor who is a senior developmental scientist. Applicants must be pursuing an area of research related to human development and have not been granted tenure as a faculty member. Click here for details.

Education Research Projects
The Spencer Foundation invites applications for its Small Research Grants Program, which will support education research projects with budgets of $50,000 or less that are not longer than five years. The program supports proposals from multiple disciplinary and methodological perspectives, both domestically and internationally, from scholars at various stages in their careers and span a wide range of topics central to education such as education, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, law, economics, history or neuroscience. Modeling and Analytics Capacity and Ecosystem for Women’s Health
According to the foundation, mathematical modeling and analytics are valuable tools for informing policy and programmatic decisions. This initiative seeks innovative approaches to modeling of women’s health issues of broader health topics that incorporate a gender lens. Priority will be given to proposals that 1) advance broad access to data to support gender intentional modelling to improve women’s health and 2) enable strong evidence-based practices to guide policy decisions. 2023 SFARI Winter Pilot Award for Autism Research
The mission of the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative is to improve the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) by funding innovative research of the highest quality and relevance. SFARI encourages applications that propose research to link genetic or other ASD risk factors to the molecular, cellular, circuit, or behavioral mechanisms and set the stage for developing novel interventions. Using the Rules of Life to Address Societal Challenges
Through use-inspired research using convergent, multidisciplinary approaches, this program seeks to apply lessons learned from studying rules of life across a broad array of living systems to tackle pressing societal concerns. These may include climate change and associated risks, including geohazards, extreme events, and loss of biodiversity; environmental degradation, including impacts on land and water resources; and inequalities in availability of and access to essential natural assets. Evidence for Action: Innovative Research to Advance Racial Equity
This funding is focused on studies about upstream causes of health inequities, such as the systems, structures, laws, policies, norms, and practices, which influence individuals’ options and behaviors. Research should center on the needs and experiences of communities exhibiting the greatest health burdens and be motivated by real-world priorities. It should be able to inform a specific course of action and/or establish beneficial practices, not stop characterizing or documenting a problem's extent. Click here for details.

ISCE Hosts Transformative Health Speaker
Tracy Gaudet MD, will speak at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, November 15, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Fralin Hall Auditorium. Having led the transformation of the Veterans Health Administration to whole health, an approach to health care that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being, Gaudet will be speaking on the national need for the transformation to whole health and the opportunity for Virginia Tech. Sponsored by the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment (ISCE), Gaudet’s presentation is available for free and open to the public. Register here.
mHealth Training Institute 2023 (mHTI) Accepting Applications
Designed to develop the next generation of transdisciplinary mHealth researchers, the hybrid program will blend webinars with in-person training (July 16-20, 2023) at the University of California, Los Angeles. New and established scholars from diverse disciplines who are interested in developing an integrative understanding of cutting-edge mHealth approaches and forging interdisciplinary connections are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to academia-based applicants seeking to co-create practical healthcare solutions with societal impact. Click here for details.

The 21st Century Agenda for Research on Child Welfare
Funded research for child welfare in the past was not focused on the voices of the multiple individuals and organizations involved in addressing the issues faced by the broader child welfare community. In collaboration with Casey Family Programs and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the 21st Century Research Agenda for Child Welfare captures the diversity of individuals involved in the child welfare system to highlight the most urgent needs. An article published by the William T. Grant Foundation explains the importance of this new agenda on the future of funded research for child welfare and reducing inequality. New Environmental Research Report
The NSF just released its Environmental Research Report, "Engaged Research for Environmental Grand Challenges: Accelerating Discovery and Innovation for Societal Impacts," which seeks to provide clarity for funding agencies and researchers on a variety of issues, including the societal challenges that require engaged research, the varied conceptualizations of engagement in literature, and the benefits and pitfalls associated with engaged research.
