Joy Guidry + Chimengi
The Music Gallery (918 Bathurst St., Toronto)
Saturday, November 12th, 2022 — 8PM (Doors at 7:30PM)
Tickets:  Regular $20 / Advance $15/ Students, Members & Low-income $10

In case you haven't encountered them before, bassoonist and composer Joy Guidry is a veritable force within exploratory music. Guidry has performed alongside Dance Centre Kenya Ballet Orchestra, International Contemporary Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound and Matana Roberts, while enjoying commissions from National Sawdust, Long Beach Opera, JACK Quartet, and the I&I Foundation. Their dizzying debut album, Radical Acceptance was launched late 2021 on Whited Sepulchre (home to releases by Ono, claire rousay and Endlings) to widespread acclaim. Embracing freeform electronics, textual collage, free jazz and delicate ensemble writing, Pitchfork described the LP as "an intense, vulnerable work that demands equally thoughtful attention and engagement."  This show marks their long-awaited Toronto debut.

Montréal's Chivengi applies a similarly unfettered and experimental approach to R&B music. While they're member of the ballroom community in Montréal, their songs carry little of the buoyancy might expect. Instead, their productions are blurry, abstract, noisy—seemingly on the verge of disintegration—yet all held together with an introspective poignancy.  Come witness this deeply intriguing artist at work!
