Why I'm Running for Re-election

After 8 years of service...there is still so much to do...

I LOVE MY COMMUNITY

I discovered Boise, and met my husband, in 1996 on a 4,000 mile cross country bicycle trip from Astoria, OR to Portland, ME. I loved Boise immediately, and I’m so happy we settled here. Boise is a thriving metropolitan city with a vibrant business and arts community nestled at the base of the foothills, giving us one of most livable cities in the country. We welcome people from all walks of life, and it’s clear from the variety of flags, from PRIDE to “everyone is welcome” signs, the heart of our city is rooted in kindness and inclusion. Read More...

STANDING UP FOR SURVIVORS OF VIOLENCE

I took my knowledge and experience as Boise State’s Women’s Center Director, working with survivors of sexual and domestic violence, to the Statehouse and passed a series of bills that has transformed how Idaho processes, tracks, preserves, and pays for sexual assault kit evidence. For the last 8 years, I have worked on legislation to improve system responses and create resources to assist survivors of violence, including legislation to prohibit firearms from convicted domestic abusers and pedophiles.  Cont...

I VALUE EDUCATION

Education changed my life, so much so that I made it my profession and devoted over 30 years to supporting thousands of college students to achieve their goals. It is the legislature’s responsibility, according to our constitution, to “maintain a general, uniform and thorough system of public, free common schools.” I take that responsibility seriously. I will continue to fight to fully fund education at all levels; invest in early learning; advocate for funding to support opportunities for higher education; support our teachers and work on ways to recruit and train our talented teachers for the future.

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS

I have fought year after year to advance women’s reproductive rights and those who are pregnant. I have fought to expand access to prescription contraception only to watch those bills killed by conservatives four years in a row. The new GOP has made it clear through their political platform that they want to codify a religious belief that life begins at fertilization and ban all types of “interference” thereafter. I will continue to fight for reproductive justice and access to the full range of reproductive health care including abortion care.

STANDING FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Everyone deserves to live in a community where they feel safe and belong. In the heart of Boise’s downtown, our Human Rights Center strikes at the heart of our values – diversity, inclusion, and a deep respect for human rights and dignity. I will continue to stand firmly against bigotry, hate, and discrimination. And I vow to continue to be a strong voice for inclusion and equity, advocating for policies that protect human rights and dignity.

ACCESS TO PUBLIC LANDS

When my husband and I moved to Idaho, we immediately began exploring our public lands. We enjoyed the wildflowers and lichens at Craters of the Moon. We climbed the great heights of Mount Borah. We backpacked in the Sawtooth Mountains and explored the Frank Church Wilderness. I found Balanced Rock and Hagerman Springs. Brad fished the pristine Middle Fork of the Salmon and Loon Creek, and we both tried “combat fishing” for salmon in Riggins. Our wilderness and recreational areas, public lands, rivers, and wildlife, make Idaho special. I am committed to protecting Idaho’s greatest resources: access to public lands, clean air and water.

QUESTIONS ON THE BALLOT

SJR 102 Constitutional Amendment
I urge your ‘No’ vote in the proposed Constitutional amendment on your ballot.
Idaho has functioned well since our state’s founding with a part-time legislature where the Governor can call a special session as needed. If the legislature is given the power to call itself back into session, as proposed by this amendment, we will move closer to a year-round legislature where citizens must be on the watch at all times to protect their interests.  In the 3 years since Utah passed a similar amendment, Utah’s legislature has had 11 special / extraordinary sessions. Idaho should not go down this path – it is unnecessary and will prove very costly to taxpayers.

Advisory Question
The advisory vote is non-binding, meaning it changes no laws or statutes. This is a self-serving question, poorly worded to frame the issue positively to allow the Governor to pat himself on the back.  The Governor called the legislature back to a special session that lasted one day - Sept. 1.  The Legislature passed a bill that created $500 million in tax rebates, lowered the state's flat income tax rate to 5.8% and allocated $410 million toward public education. Reclaim Idaho backed the Governor and the legislature into a corner with enough signatures to get a question on the ballot to fund education at higher levels by increasing corporate income taxes and taxes paid by those earning $250K (filing single) or $500K (filing jointly). So, the Gov called the special session to try to secure funding by bartering with GOP to incorporate a flat tax and enacting yet another income tax rebate that still benefits the wealthiest among us INSTEAD OF addressing property taxes AGAIN.

FEATURED STATEWIDE ELECTIONS

TERRI PICKENS MANWEILLER FOR LT GOVENOR ...

The Lt Gov position presides over the Senate in session.  I would love to be recognized on the floor of the Senate by "Madame President," Terri Pickens Manweiler.

ADA COUNTY ELECTIONS TO WATCH

THE COLLEGE OF WESTERN IDAHO BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION

The College of Western Idaho is governed by a volunteer, five-member board of trustees. Trustees are elected at large from within Ada and Canyon Counties for staggered, four-year terms, and derive their authority from and hold office in accordance with State of Idaho Code.

The Responsibilities of the Board of Trustees are outlined in the College of Western Idaho Board Policies.

They have a great board and we need to keep them there and keep our college safe from extremists who want to take it over and censor public education curriculum.
