Fishing & Birding Reports

Fishing Report

We had a little break last week, but we are fish processing machines this week. The smoker is going daily and I think that I am going to wear out my vacuum sealer. There is a ton of bait in the water. The full moon has passed, but the fish keep biting. The warm water even looks to be pushing back. You'd probably find Dorado at 15mi. to the south, but marlin are even closer.

Most everyone is trolling in close, but jigging works. There were some good boils and fish hooked on poppers. Some sunrise warriors found some hot early bites. The Bonita were thick at times, but I haven't caught many monsters lately. The big ones could return though.

A lot of big Sierra are showing up. They are my favorite to smoke. Yellowtail are running a good size, and it only takes a few to fill up some gallon bags. We caught a couple today just fifteen yards off the rocks.

There's lots of action in the bays, dolphin around, and a Fin Whale passed us a half mile out. We're seeing mostly calm mornings, but watch for those fronts!

Birding Report

Hola Dear Birding Enthusiasts,

I am so happy to be back in San Carlos and have started exploring our various excellent birding areas. Winter birds are arriving and it will be interesting to watch in the next few weeks as different species arrive to spend time in the desert or in estuaries such as Estero Soldado.

My Bird of the Week is the American Oystercatcher. I took the photo yesterday on San Francisco Beach near the Delfin Condos but we are also seeing it at Estero Soldado.

You will not mix up this bird with any other in our area. It is about the size of a crow, boldly black and  white, and sporting a thick bright red bill. They also have a bright reddish orange eye ring that clearly stands out. You will usually find them in twos as they remain paired year round.

Oystercatchers live on shellfish: oysters, clams, and molluscs. Because their diet is so specialized, they are found only in salt marshes (including estuaries) and along protected beaches where shellfish are able to thrive. The Black Oystercatcher lives along the Pacific Coast and where ranges overlap, the two often interbreed. Here in San Carlos, we only see the American Oystercatcher.

Besides being very unique in appearance, Oystercatchers also have a unique and very loud call and you will often hear it as they chatter to their mate. Click here to hear the call.

I will be beginning the Birding Outings starting this Thursday, November 10. We will meet at the Esterito Cafe at 8:00am. You do not need to be an experienced birder to join our group. If you do not know anything except that you want to know more, our group will help you learn. If you are an experienced birder and just want to know other birders, then join us and share your knowledge. Please bring your water, sun and insect protection, and a chair. And your binoculars, of course. Outings usually last until around 11:30am and we generally go out to lunch. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com.

CRRIFS: What’s Afoot with the Blue-Footed Boobies?

It’s not uncommon for local beachgoers to come across seabirds displaying symptoms of illness -- coughing with weeping eyes, wobbling, displaying no fear of humans -- or with injuries such as broken wings.

If you should happen upon an ill or injured bird, Dr. Elsa Coria, wildlife veterinarian and director of CRRIFS, cautions that it’s very important to stand back and observe the avian and, if possible, to send GPS coordinates with its location to her rescue team.

"If you see a debilitated or disoriented bird with strange behaviors, please take a photo or video from a distance, and we will come to check to see if it’s possible to rehabilitate the bird."

Beachgoers recently alerted Dr. Elsa about a juvenile blue-footed booby that was unable to fly nor could it lift its wings.

But after nearly a month in rehabilitation, the booby is doing well, having recovered from a possible infection and associated malnutrition with a regular diet of fish, thanks to donations from local fish vendor and CRRIFS volunteer Isis Morales.

Found throughout the Eastern Pacific’s coastlines, blue-footed boobies are a major attraction in the Galápagos archipelago, but we’re also fortunate to have them in our area.

Spectacular divers, they can plunge from heights of up to 30 meters, hitting the water at 90 kph (60 mph), their brains protected from impact by special air sacs. To aid in diving, their nostrils are permanently closed, and they instead breathe through the corners of their mouths.

Distinguished by their bright blue feet, healthier boobies have more intensely turquoise feet which they show off to potential mates with high-stepping strutting around their nesting grounds on local volcanic islands. The blue color is derived from carotenoids in the smaller fish and squid they consume.

When their food sources such as sardines decline, adult boobies will often make the decision not to nest. Perhaps because of declining fish stocks, the world has seen a 50% decline in their total numbers over the last 30 years.

To learn more about CRRIFS' conservation programs or to report injured wildlife or sea turtle tracks or nests, please email contacto@crrifs.com or call 622-152-9934.

The SBPA is putting out a Call For Volunteers.

Handymen/women Needed for Castaway Kids Projects

Mark Mulligan’s first work with Castaway Kids in 1994. The program expanded after the devastating effects of Hurricane Jimena. The Charles D. Trover Family Foundation joined the team in 2016. This has made it possible to continue to improve housing for our Mexican neighbors living in vulnerable situations.

We repair roofs, add flooring, cover windows, install doors, and improve septic and plumbing systems. Castaway Kids has built entire homes, many for single mothers and their children. Having a safe home reduces the risk of mental stress and the trauma of a perilous living situation.

What can you do?
 * We would to love have a small group of handymen and women available to help with small projects like hanging doors, general landscaping, and basic repairs for properties.
 * We often receive donations of electronics and other items that require some tinkering and/or small improvements. If you like the challenge of making the old new again, we would love to have you on our team!
 * Donate your gently used household goods like sheets, small appliances, and dishes and furniture to our Thrift Store.
 * If you use Amazon Smile, select Castaway Kids as your designated charity. A portion of your overall spending will be donated to Castaway Kids.

Thank you for your support!
