Yo! I keep surprising myself with these Monday drops - but I’m kind of loving it. What do you think? Is this a nice surprise on a Monday, or is Friday better?

This weekend was a doozy cleaning out my childhood home, so I couldn’t be more excited to be here with a little escapism, talking about all things beauty with one of my amazing friends Sarah, who I met late last year through Google.

She joined my team about a year ago and we quickly found ourselves advancing on the coworkers to besties pipeline. I was assigned to her as her onboarding buddy, and as we got to know each other we realized we had a lot in common … we grew up relatively close to each other in Connecticut, both went away to boarding school, and then landed in New York in the ad-tech space. But more importantly, our “extracurricular affinities” lined up pretty closely, which we realized one day when we started talking about our favorite facials in NYC (mine: Christine Chin, hers: Silver Mirror).

Anyway, it’s an awesome full circle moment to have her here on The Brightside talking about her journey with beauty, which was one of the first things we really bonded over.

With just a few hours left in the Sephora sale, maybe this will inspire you to pull the trigger on those fun toys you’ve been eyeing … or just remember to do something that makes you feel beautiful tonight.

Sarah, over to you!
How did you get into beauty, what has been your journey? Is this something you’ve always been into, or did you get into it more in your late 20s?

Let’s put it this way, I thought I was a beauty guru pre-20s. Thinking back to my high school and college days, I did either unhealthy or trend-specific beauty rituals -  tanning beds or orange booth spray tans, waxing to thin eyebrows, tiger stripe hair highlights, etc. you name it. While I absolutely still follow the trends, I would say the interest in age-defying, timeless beauty hacks came in the late 20s. Understanding the order in which applying makeup looks best, what certain creams/serums/toners can do, even how hormones play a role in everything, are the things I’m chasing these days (or already know). I just entered my 30s and I’m excited to have developed a solid routine that really plays to natural beauty!

You have extensive product knowledge. How do you do your research? What’s your advice for girlies who don’t know where to start?

I have to give it up to TikTok screen time and my friends - a lot of what I’ve learned is word of mouth. Or doing something the wrong way, paying the price, and researching to fix. For example, my first time dermaplaning my face, I broke out horribly (as people do). As I did more research and came to understand my skin doesn’t tolerate oily products, and now do that process with foamy cleaner (Sanitas Sensitive Skin) versus an oil. My advice is just being open to trying new things - it’s a process of trial and error, in my book.

I love how you embrace your love of beauty, and the way you explore everything from coolsculpting to hair-oiling. Sometimes I think there’s this pressure to pretend like we are indifferent to beauty - or hide how much effort we put into looking “effortless”. Have you ever struggled with the weird social stigma around beauty, and how have you dealt with that?

We hear people say things like “I only need tinted moisturizer and mascara” or “Why would you get botox/fillers?” and sometimes I need to catch myself and allow that not to influence how I feel about ME, or the beauty rituals I see as important. If I happened to like wearing a full coverage foundation, I would want to be proud of that - or as someone who dabbles in injectables, I am confident about having had those treatments and happy to share my experience. Beauty will always have ‘standards’ but it’s also quite personal.

What experiences or treatments would you say are worth the hype

Brow lamination, eyelash extensions (Secret Eyelash in Koreatown is the best), lip filler (natural enhancement only with Rachel Rubin), lymphatic drainage massages (BerrySpa is my go-to because they have a Groupon for your 1st session), the NuFace (the mini version is enough), and I’m sure there’s more. Also if you’re thinking of where to get your brows done, not-so-shameless plug - my favorite brow girl is Tammy Fisher from Browtise. She is the most genuine person and really cares about you walking away happy. I don’t let anyone else touch my eyebrows!

We both have pretty acne prone skin. What’s your makeup strategy to cover up acne?

I had perfect skin for so much of my life, not to mention the freckles have hidden imperfections. In my late-20s, coming off birth control and Spironolactone (derms prescribe this to curb sebum production and help with hormonal breakouts), my skin has gone into a frenzy. What’s really working for me lately is using a tinted SPF (TiZO3 Facial Mineral Sunscreen) and then dabbing concealer on the spots (Kosas w/Golden undertones to balance out purple/red) and leaving it to sit there not rubbed in for like 3-5 minutes. Once the consistency is thicker, then dab it around with a finger to spread out and some light tapping of powder with a fluffy brush over the top to seal the deal (FitMe [Non-Translucent] Matte Powder).

What’s a beauty trend you’re obsessed with right now?
Hair oiling - I just bought everything I need to start the process! Empty tincture bottles, rosemary essential oil, castor oil as a carrier and scalp massager. The plan is to massage a little bit of my homemade mixer into the scalp, add a hair mask to the ends, and let this sit for a couple hours before my shampoo days. I have had fine hair my whole life and I’m excited to see what this will do. Pro tip: A lot of this stuff is available for cheap on Amazon.

What’s your best splurge product and best dupe?

Splurge: Hard to boil this down to one thing, but probably the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Setting Spray or Hollywood Flawless Filter - her products are pricey but worth it entirely.

Dupe: IDK if this counts, but Il Makiage Sunless Foam instead of getting any professional spray tans, this stuff is magic. You save some $$ this way!

What are your go-to beauty spots in New York?

Haircut & color: I am hooked on Spoke and Weal (either Flaitron or Soho locations - Mariel and Erika are my gals)

BotoxEveryBody SoHo

Spray Tan: Sugared & Bronzed

Facials: Silver Mirror (good membership rate)

Face Laser Treatments: My good friend Kari Lowe and Dr. Sobel

Sarah's closing us out today with 5 products between $20-30 she recommends grabbing during the last few hours of the Sephora sale!

Refy Brow Sculpt - $24

How I use the product -
I use this product to get the laminated brow look and it comes out so flawless

Tips for use - A lot of product comes out, so wipe the brush on the edges before applying! Using a clean spoolie, I push the brows up which can sometimes get product on my low forehead so I use a q-tip to wipe off anything that is on my skin.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz - $25

How I use the product - Sparingly because I used to go hard with this but have noticed the lighter I do it, the more natural but full the brows can look. I like to use this before the sculpt product - if you used a powder you could do it after.

Tips for use - Just flicking it through in the direction of the hair growth can make this most natural. I also don’t do an exact color match, usually a little lighter but nothing major, just so it doesn’t look so intense and more so a drop shadow.

REPLICA by Maison Margiela Perfumes (Favorites: Lazy Sunday, Jazz Club) - $32 [Travel Spray]

How I use the product - Everyday with this travel size still lasts me a long time, I don’t like to overdo perfume. I never feel the need to get the big version

Tips for use - I like trying the different fragrances of line by season, for instance Lazy Sunday felt more Summer and Jazz Club feels more Fall, which is what I just transitioned to

ILIA Mascara Limitless Lash - $28

How I use the product - Everyday holy grail mascara, always can make me look that much more put together!

Tips for use - I use an eyelash curler before to really help the product look better, I just recently grabbed the
Shiseido Curler ($23) and love it

Saie Liquid Cheek Blush -  $25

How I use the product - I have lately been using this blush when I don’t have time or feel like bronzer, and I feel like it gives my face so much color and dimension

Tips for use - I do a small dot on my checks and with my fingers bring it up towards my temples - sometimes a small dot on my nose, as well, to give a sunkissed look
