Director's Note...

Dear Parents,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our worship service on Saturday night.  Mark your calendar for December 10 at 5 p.m. for our Preschool Christmas Service.

We will be closed this Friday in honor of Veterans Day.  There will be no preschool or extended care.

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it.  The following comes from Concordia Publishing House Blog on simple ways to help kids give thanks.  You can read more at Simple Ways to Help Kids Give Thanks (cph.org). With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s the perfect time for encouraging children and teens to give thanks for all the special gifts God has provided. Here are a few ideas to get started.

Give Thanks in Prayer

Even from an early age, it’s important to teach kids that prayer begins and ends with God’s true Word. Find a few Bible verses or stories that encourage thankfulness. Then, talk about what each verse means and say a prayer of thanks specifically for the gifts mentioned in each story. Here are a few examples:

  • Genesis 1 & 2: Thank God for His Creation
  • Matthew 27 & 28: Thank God for His Saving Work in Jesus
  • Acts 2: Thank God for Sending the Holy Spirit

Another way to give thanks in prayer is through an activity called Highs and Lows. During prayer time, each member identifies the day’s highs (positive things/events) and lows (not-so wonderful things/events). Try to identify both. Talk about what to give thanks to God for in the highs and lows. Also talk about what needs help, including what needs to happen for the highs to remain high and how to solve any problems with the lows, perhaps by saying, “I’m sorry” and/or “Please forgive me for Jesus’ sake.” Then take all those things to Jesus in prayer. We also have some free Thank-You prayers from Wiggle and Wonder that you can download for your children to color and remember God’s provision.

Make Craft Projects

Here are a few low-cost, simple craft projects to do with your kids.

Start a Thanksgiving chain. Write or draw things for which you are thankful on a strip of paper. Make a chain and say “Thank You, God, for . . .” as you add links. Then, each day remove one link, pray, and give thanks for the item written down.

Create Thanksgiving place mats. This can be as simple as using construction paper or regular paper to make the place mats. Have kids jot down what they are thankful for on each place mat. Add fun stickers or artwork. Laminate for durability if desired.

Make a thankful tree. Grab a small branch and place in a vase. Cut out small leaf shapes and use a hole puncher. Have children write down or draw what they are thankful for on the leaves. Using string, children can hang these on their thankful tree.

Serve Others in Need

  • Pack boxes at a food bank or donate food. Include a card with a “God bless you” note. Pray for the people who will receive the food.  (See below for our Operation Christmas Child Shoebox campaign.)
  • Rake leaves with a group or as a family for older people or others who need it!
  • Make easy gifts like sun catchers or cards for older people or for those who are ill.

Each year at this time we participate in the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox campaign (https://samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/the-journey-of-a-shoebox/). If you would like to participate, you can pick up a box in the preschool office or church narthex. These boxes are filled with gifts to bless children in need around the world.  Our goal is to fill 500 boxes.  Please return your box by Wednesday, November 15th, 2022.

Grace and Peace,
Mary Wolfinbarger

This Week in Jesus Circle
Bible Story:  Samuel as a Boy – God Calls His People to Serve (1 Samuel 1:21-28; 3) Law:  Sometimes, you do what you want instead of what God wants. Gospel:  Through Word and Sacrament, God calls you to faith and new life.  Sanctification:   Through the power of the Holy Spirit, listen to God’s call and follow His will.
Bible Words:  Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

You can read this week's story in "The Story Bible" on pages 169-171.  We will have chapel in our own classrooms this week as the church is installing new lighting this week.

Dear Family: Your child has been learning about Samuel’s birth. Read the story together. Hannah prayed for a child. When God answered her prayer, she vowed to give the child back to God to serve Him. Remind your child how special she is to you. Look at baby pictures together. Prepare your child for a life of service to God by having family devotions, worshiping together, and reminding her that she is a beloved child of God. Pray often together.

Our chapel offerings will go toward the Grantparent Program.  The purpose of the Grantparent Program is to provide tuition assistance to students in urban communities so that they can receive an excellent Christian and academic education.  Many children living in urban communities need to hear the Good News of Jesus in a safe, nurturing environment, but they can't afford tuition to attend a Lutheran school.

From Our Handbook

Educational Approach
We are a developmental, play-based preschool. Small motor development occurs through manipulative materials in the classroom, such as blocks, puzzles, sorting, sensory experiences, and art activities such as cutting, gluing, coloring, painting, printing, play dough, and weaving. Socialization skills and school readiness are developed in fun ways through interaction in the housekeeping area, book corner, and small group activities. We create an atmosphere that is comfortable and compatible with the children's interests and abilities.
Large muscle development occurs through active play. The children paint large pictures (sometimes covering the entire fence with paper to paint on), they dig, climb, run, hop, swing, balance, ride tricycles and scooters, use sand toys, play with the parachute, and bounce, catch and throw balls.
During our inside group (circle) time each day, children learn through the repetitious daily curriculum that may include helper charts, share time, stories, fingerplays, prayer, songs, opening, and closing routines, name recognition, and theme-related activities. The group time is geared to the attention span of each room's enrollment.
Toys from home are discouraged as they cause distractions when a child does not want others to play with them or if the toy is lost or broken. If a toy is brought from home, it will be kept in the child's cubby for the day. We do not allow any violent type of toys to be brought to the preschool at any time, nor are the children allowed to play in an aggressive, violent way.
Each classroom will post a weekly lesson plan. We use our Pacific Southwest District Curriculum Guide as the basis for our assessments, which are done three times per year. The curriculum guide is available on our website.
We are a play-based developmental program that intentionally gives different learning opportunities to the children throughout the day, week, and year. We use "One in Christ," "Enduring Faith," "Handwriting Without Tears," "ZooPhonics," and "Conscious Discipline" in our classrooms. Each teacher develops lessons based on the developmental needs of the children in their care. Each child will receive a portfolio at the end of the school calendar year that has been developed throughout the year on our Kaymbu app that serves as a view of their developmental progress, and we hope it will be a treasured keepsake for years to come.
We offer a weekly Music circle time for our students and a weekly Spanish circle time. These are provided as part of our preschool program at no additional cost to our families. Classroom teachers are present during the music and Spanish lessons and extend the lessons learned into the classroom throughout the year.

Parenting Tip from Conscious Discipline

My daughter tattles on the children around her, even when what they are doing has no impact on her. What can I do to make this tattling stop?
In this tattling scenario, the child is telling you about something that is happening around her, not to her. Sometimes children use tattling because they think it’s helpful to let adults know what someone else is doing. Other times, the motivation behind tattling may be to get another child in trouble because s/he bruised the tattler’s feelings in some way earlier in the day. Regardless of the motivation, you can utilize tattling to focus on personal self-control and teach self-control to children.

As your child approaches you and says, “Kimberly isn’t doing her homework,” try responding, “Are you telling me to be helpful or hurtful?” This question will bring the child’s awareness to his or her own intent. Young children who are very honest will often say, “Hurtful.” Your response would then be, “What could you do right now to be helpful?” Generally, the child will not know. This will give you the wonderful opportunity to teach. You might say, “You could go to Kimberly and ask her if she would like some help with her homework.”

If the child’s response to your original question is “helpful,” then you can ask, “How is telling me about Kimberly helpful?” The child may respond, “I want her to get good grades.” Then you can direct the child to share those thoughts with Kimberly by saying, “If you want Kimberly to get good grades, you could ask if she needs help with her homework.”
