Welcome to the October issue of the health management newsletter!

EHMA welcomes the European Commission decision to make 2023 the 'Year of Skills'. This follows the announcement made by President von der Leyen in the 'State of the Union', where she underlined how more investments are needed on professional education and upskilling.

EHMA fully supports this initiative. Our BeWell project has already took the first steps in developing a skills strategy for the health workforce with a focus on digital and green skills. The EUVECA project will support the sector's needs for innovation providing future-oriented skills to the health workforce. Finally, we are also contributing as supporting partner to the Joint Action HEROES focused of workforce planning.

For the Year of Skills, the European Commission will work closely with the European Parliament, Member States, social partners, employment services, chambers of commerce and industry, education and training providers, and workers and companies. The aims are to promote investments in training and upskilling; ensure that skills are relevant to labour market needs; match skill sets with opportunities, especially for the green and digital transition; and strengthen learning opportunities, mobility and recognition of qualifications.

The burden of RSV: How the scientific community can help

EHMA has been focussing on RSV because of its major disruption to health systems, making it a key interest for health management. RSV is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants. Globally, in 2019, there were approx. 33 million cases of acute LRTIs leading to more than three million hospitalisations.
We recently carried out a survey that outlined the burden of this common virus, and with RSV season commencing makes it an important time to review response efforts. Our Executive Director, George Valiotis teamed up with Michelle Roberts, MD to share some key findings the survey uncovered.

Putting value at the heart of the procurement process

Implementing value-based procurement within a healthcare setting is not easy, but it is worth it. In cases of limited resources, price-based procurement does not yield the best outcomes, especially in the healthcare sector. Budget constraints require innovative approaches and value-based procurement is one of the solutions to turn to.
This EcoQUIP+ webinar discussed how health managers can achieve better value in healthcare by making strategic use of procurement and how they can incorporate the concept of ‘value’ in their procurement process with Prof Dr Louise Knight and Ms Caterina Sampol.
