I got a summary from AmazonSmile showing my total contributions since I signed up in 2016. My charity of choice is Banderas Bay Charities, Inc., and I'm proud to have generated more than US $1,000 to it, even given the relatively small percentage that Amazon contributes.  Just wanted to remind all of you that if you buy through AmazonSmile rather than Amazon or AmazonPrime, you too can automatically contribute to PEACE with every purchase you make. Couldn't be easier to sign up using your Amazon account.

Banderas Bay Charities, Inc supports PEACEAnimals, Amigos de La Cruz and other local charities.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Dia de Muertos

by Clare Leach

We got up early this morning to head to the Malecon to see the Catrinas for Dia de Muertos. Figuring we would miss the crowds since Sunday is usually a day that the city sleeps later, we were surprised that the Malecon was filled.

Puerto Vallarta is going for Guinness World Records for the tallest Catrina ever displayed. Last year’s prize went to Zapotlanejo in Jalisco with a Calavera Catrina 18.7 meters. This year’s PV Catrina is 24 meters and the largest ever in the world. She is so tall it is hard to photograph her.

The festive mood today is palpable reminding me of pre-pandemic celebrations. Happy dogs are walking with owners who have a leash in one hand and camera in the other.

Dia de Muertos or Day of the Dead originated with the Aztecs and has been observed for about 3000 years. It begins at midnight on October 31st and ends on the 2nd of November. Traditionally, November 1st is the day to commemorate children and infants who have passed ( Dia de los inocentes) and November 2nd is the day for deceased adults. Mexicans believe that the gates to the other world open at midnight on October 31st allowing the souls of children to visit the living for 24 hours. After they depart on the night of November 1st, spirits of adults will come down and enjoy the alters and celebrations for them.

The altars are brightly decorated with photos of deceased family members. Many families save all year to build the altars and celebrate their deceased members. Each altar has drinks, Agua Frescas, tequila or beer, tamales, pan de muerto, candles, resin and Marigolds or other flowers.  Marigolds were used by the Aztecs for Dia de Muertos. Each altar has unique offerings that the family knows the departed liked while alive. Visiting cemeteries and decorating graves is also an important part of the celebration. Sugar or chocolate skull candy is popular. Many stores sell Dia de Muerto bread around the holiday. The Dia de Muertos coincides with All Saints Day for the church.

Dia De Muertos is such a rich and sacred commemoration; it is an honor to be able to be here and experience this tradition. The altars are not just in town but in most homes throughout Puerto Vallarta and all of Mexico.

Altavela

Anthony, Leslie, Pacheco y Ali tuvieron otra semana segura y exitosa.

The people in Altavela love their pets and always look forward to the PEACEAnimals clinics.

Mireya opened up her house again for us to hold the clinic.  She is an amazing host and is the key to our successful clinics in Altavela promoting and reaching out to their community and helping with registering and intake of animals.

Our team always feels welcome. Many of the pet owners here assist with the recovery of their animals and pitch in with the others as well. Anthony, Leslie, Pacheco, and Ali had another safe and successful week.
