After COVID, life slowly resumes - at least that's what everyone hopes
We had a lot of plans and prjects for 2020, but were surprised by the pandemic - since all had to go into the deep freeze. We could only keep in touch and exchange information via zoom. We tried to build contacts between associations and volunteers through free and open webinars - two more of which are planned this year .
But of course, this is just a band-aid on a wooden leg.
After the inactivity by COVID and its aftermath, we are now at the point of reactivating EFAITH for 2023, resuming our activities.
What does this mean in concrete terms ?
Memberships
- Membership of all organisations and individuals who paid membership dues from 2020 onwards will be extended until the end of 2023 - so they will not have to pay dues before 2024.
- However, voluntary support is always possible and appreciated
- In previous years, membership recruitment could not be done because activities were at a low ebb. We now want to tinker with that and count on every one to encourage membership.
Board
Following the amendment of the articles of association, a general meeting should have been held in 2020 to appoint a new board of directors. For known reason, this could not take place, was postponed to 2021, 2022 and now to 2023
- The general assembly will be scheduled after Easter, during the traditional weekend for volunteers and associations
- Candidates who want to be part of the new team can apply from now on - we will then keep in touch with them until the general assembly and inform them about the ins and outs of EFAITH
Scheduled
- Two more free webinars will take place this year, on Saturdays 12 November and 10 December during the afternoon. The call-for-papers is open
- For 2023, we are planning our traditional weekend after Easter in the 'FlaxValey' (Kortrijk and surroundings in Belgium). Dates, programme and budgets are now being discussed. Details will be announced as soon as possible.
- In the Autumn of 2023, we would like to organise a weekend on mining heritage, after those in Beringen (2018) and Peñarroya (2019). The third edition, planned for 2020 had to be cancelled at the time. We are now looking for a new interesting and easily accessible location to host it this year. Candidatesto host the meeting can contact us.
- In addition, we would like to devote each year from 2023 to one type of industrial heritage, to promote its importance at European level - and if possible to build a network of organisations and initiators around that theme.
For 2023, we are considering the theme of factory chimneys, which in cities and the countryside are landmarks of past industrial activities and the work of men and women.
- We also want to reactivate the Industriana label from next year. Due to the problems during the pandemic years, that project took a bit of a back seat. However, the multilingual label with its QR code proved its usefulness for numerous sites, and is now present in 12 European countries.

Après le COVID, la vie reprend lentement - du moins, c'est ce que tout le monde espère.
Nous avions beaucoup de plans et de projets pour 2020, mais nous avons été surpris par la pandémie - depuis tout a dû être mis au frigo. Nous n'avons pu garder le contact et échanger des informations que par le biais du zoom. Nous avons essayé d'établir des contacts entre les associations et les bénévoles par le biais de webinaires gratuits et ouverts - deux autres sont prévus cette année.
Mais bien sûr, ce n'est qu'un pansement sur une jambe de bois.
Après l'inactivité du COVID et ses conséquences, nous en sommes maintenant au point de réactiver l' EFAITH pour 2023, en reprenant nos activités.
Qu'est-ce que cela signifie concrètement ?
Adhésions
- L'adhésion de toutes les organisations et personnes qui ont payé des cotisations à partir de 2020 sera prolongée jusqu'à la fin de 2023 - elles ne devront donc pas payer de cotisations avant 2024.
- Toutefois, un soutien volontaire est toujours possible et apprécié
- Les années précédentes, le recrutement des membres n'a pas pu se faire car les activités étaient au plus bas. Nous voulons maintenant remédier à cela et compter sur chacun pour encourager l'adhésion.
Conseil d'administration
Suite à la modification des statuts, une assemblée générale aurait dû être organisée en 2020 pour désigner un nouveau conseil d'administration. Pour des raisons connues, celle-ci n'a pu avoir lieu, a été reportée à 2021, 2022 et maintenant à 2023
- L'assemblée générale sera programmée après Pâques, pendant le week-end traditionnel pour les bénévoles et les associations.
- Les candidats qui veulent faire partie de la nouvelle équipe peuvent se présenter dès maintenant - nous resterons alors en contact avec eux jusqu'à l'assemblée générale et les informerons des tenants et aboutissants du EFAITH
Programmation
- Deux webinaires gratuits auront lieu cette année, les samedis 12 novembre et 10 décembre dans l'après-midi. L'appel à contributions est ouvert
- Pour 2023, nous prévoyons notre traditionnel week-end après Pâques dans la 'Vallée du Lin'' (Courtrai et environs en Belgique). Les dates, le programme et les budgets sont en cours de discussion. Les détails seront annoncés dès que possible.
- A l'automne 2023, nous souhaiterions organiser un week-end sur le patrimoine minier, après ceux de Beringen (2018) et Peñarroya (2019). La troisième édition, prévue en 2020 a dû être annulée à l'époque. Nous sommes maintenant à la recherche d'un nouveau lieu intéressant et facilement accessible pour l'accueillir cette année. Les candidats à l'accueil de la réunion peuvent nous contacter.
- Par ailleurs, nous aimerions consacrer chaque année à partir de 2023 à un type de patrimoine industriel, afin de promouvoir son importance au niveau européen - et si possible construire un réseau d'organisations et d'initiateurs autour de ce thème.
Pour 2023, nous envisageons le thème des cheminées d'usine, qui dans les villes et les campagnes sont des repères des activités industrielles passées et du travail des hommes et des femmes.
- Nous souhaitons également réactiver le label Industriana dès l'année prochaine. En raison des problèmes survenus pendant les années de pandémie, ce projet a été quelque peu mis en veilleuse. Cependant, le label multilingue avec son QR code a prouvé son utilité pour de nombreux sites, et est maintenant présent dans 12 pays européens.

HECTOR
The Erasmus+ project 'HECTOR' (Industrial Heritage as Key Competence for Tourist Operators) also had to be shifted to the virtual world. The planned lessons had to be translated into online modules.The students who successfully completed the online modules could participate in September in an internship week in Abbadia San Salvatore in Italy.
The partners are now discussing how to continue the positive experience. In any case, the online modules will remain available.Their avalabilitiy will be an advantage in the long run.

Industriana
est un label avec code QR, qui présente des sites industriels à travers l’Europe, avec possibilité des textes téléchargeables dans toutes les langues européennes.
Idée lancée en 2015 par l’EFAITH, puis développée et adaptée dans le cadre du projet ' Genius Loci' avec le soutien du programme COSME de l’Union Européenne.
Testé en 2017 dans 5 pays (Italie, Hongrie, Malte, Espagne et Belgique) le système à été perfectionné et il est maintenant déployé dans d’autres pays.

INDUSTRIANA
A European industrial heritage label with QR-code
The idea of ‘Industriana’ was launched by EFAITH in 2015, at the occasion of the European Industrial and Technical Heritage Year, to develop a multi-lingual label with QR-code mapping valuable industrial heritage sites in the member states of the Council of Europe.
It could be further developed in 2017 as part of the Genius Loci project which was co-financed by the European Commission under the European Union’s COSME Programme. After testing in five countries (Italy, Spain, Hungary, Malta and Belgium) and for three industrial heritage sectors (textiles, alcoholic beverages and clay processing) its software was further adapted and developed.
Now the label offers, behind its QR code five pages which can be filled in with information, pictures, links to Youtube or Vimeo, etc.. But what makes the Industriana label unique is the fact that - as far as the owner or manager of the site prefers - each page can be provided, in parallel, in each European languages - even smaller languages as Welsh, Galician or Bask.
Since the conclusion of Genius Loci, in the autumn of last year, EFAITH and our partners further developed the INDUSTRIANA concept. Now the network is being enlarged and sites from other regions and countries, while also other types of industrial and technical heritage can join.

European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2022.
In Prague, during the European Cultural Heritage Summit, the European Commission and Europa Nostra were proud to present the winners of the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2022. This year, which marks the 20th anniversary of Europe’s most prestigious Awards in the heritage field, 30 outstanding best-practice examples for the safeguarding of heritage from 18 European countries have been awarded.

The Awards identify and promote best practices in the conservation and enhancement of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, stimulate the trans-frontier exchange of knowledge throughout Europe, increase public awareness and appreciation of Europe’s cultural heritage and encourage further excellent initiatives through the power of example.
Applications are invited to the following five categories of entry: Conservation and Adaptive Reuse; Research; Education, Training and Skills; Citizens Engagement and Awareness-raising; Heritage Champions.

2023: campagne pour
les cheminées d'usine
Les cheminées d'usine sont des repères, des symboles du travail qui s'est déroulé à leurs pieds. Elles font partie de l'identité d'une ville, d'un village.
Les cheminées d'usine représentent un patrimoine industriel important.
Mais elles sont en voie de disparition.
C'est pourquoi EFAITH lancera en 2023 une campagne pour les cheminées d'usine, et a besoin de votre soutien.
Nous voulons:
- développer un réseau de partenaires européens prêts à investir durablement dans la (re)valorisation des cheminées d'usine, aussi bien au niveau local qu'au niveau européen
- encourager les projets locaux de cheminées et les intégrer dans un réseau européen commun
- promouvoir des actions et des activités qui attirent l'attention sur une ou plusieurs cheminées d'usine, soulignant ainsi leur importance et la nécessité de les protéger et de les conserver.
- dresser un inventaire des cheminées survivantes dans les différents pays membres du Conseil de l'Europe. Un questionnaire pour envoyer les données de votre région peut être téléchargée de notre site web.
Les contributions seront ensuite mises en ligne et constitueront une base de données d'information et une source d'inspiration.

Factory chimneys campaign 2023:
Old factory chimneys are landmarks advertising the industrial heritage site below. They are symbols for the labour which took place at their feet. They are part of the identity of a town, a village, a former industrial area.
They can be seen from a large distance, thus promoting local industrial heritage sites
But they are endangered.
Factory chimneys become heritage.
Thus EFAITH will launch in 2023 a factory chimneys campaign, and needs your support
We want to
- develop a network of European partners prepared to invest sustainably in the (re)valuation of factory chimneys, as well locally as on a European level
- incentivise local chimney projects and incorporate these in a common European network
- promote actions and activities that draw attention to one or several factory chimneys, thus highlighting their importance and the need for protection and conservation
- .Draw up an inventory of surviving chimneys in the various countries belonging to the Council of Europe. A card to send the data from your region can be downloaded from our website
The contributions afterwards will be put online and will provide an information data base and a source of inspiration for participants and everyone else in Europe.

BELGIUM
Save the Kortrijk railway station
In the 1944 Allied bombing of the city of Kortrijk, 1850 buildings were destroyed and 515 civilians were killed. The 19th-century railway station was also destroyed. After the war, it was decided in 1951 to build a new station on the same site, designed by the renowned Kortrijk architect Pierre Albert Pauwels. The new station was opened in 1956.
This Kortrijk station is a symbol of the city's reconstruction. It is one of the most important, if not the most important example of reconstruction stations in Flanders. It is in fact the last example of a great reconstruction station realised after WWII.
It is now endangered as the Belgian railway company NMBS/SNCB wants to demolish it.
In Kortrijk, the demolition plans have already caused quite a commotion, and action is now being taken by all means to save the station. Almost 1,800 signatures have already been placed on an online petition.
The Flemish Association for Industrial Archaeology supports the démarches of the Kortrijk citizens and organisations and recently submitted a dossier to Europa Nostra for The 7 Most Endagered campaign. A dossier for legal protection of the station is currently being prepared.

Sauvez la gare de Courtrai
Lors des bombardements de la ville de Courtrai par les Alliés en 1944, 1850 bâtiments ont été détruits et 515 civils ont été tués. La gare ferroviaire du XIXe siècle a également été détruite. Après la guerre, il a été décidé en 1951 de construire une nouvelle gare sur le même site, conçue par le célèbre architecte courtraisien Pierre Albert Pauwels. La nouvelle gare a été ouverte en 1956.
Cette gare de Courtrai est un symbole de la reconstruction de la ville. Elle est l'un des plus importants, sinon le plus important exemple de gare de reconstruction en Flandre. C'est en fait le dernier exemple d'une grande gare de reconstruction réalisée après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Elle est aujourd'hui menacée, car la compagnie ferroviaire belge NMBS/SNCB veut la démolir.
À Courtrai, les plans de démolition ont déjà provoqué une certaine agitation, et des mesures sont prises par tous les moyens pour sauver la gare. Près de 1 800 signatures ont déjà été déposées sur une pétition en ligne.
L'Association flamande pour l'archéologie industrielle soutient les démarches des citoyens et des organisations de Courtrai et a récemment soumis un dossier à Europa Nostra dans le cadre de la campagne "Les 7 monuments les plus menacés". Un dossier de protection juridique de la gare est en cours de préparation.

The Walde lighthouse
Built in 1859, the Walde lighthouse is to this day the only lighthouse with a metal structure on piles still in place in France. Located on the beach at Marck, a few kilometres from Calais, it is in danger of collapsing. Several associations have been fighting for years to save the lighthouse that marks the separation of the Channel and the North Sea. On July 7th the light house finally was scheduled ancient monument
In the Eure department schoolchildren discover the industrial heritage
Throughout the year, the schoolchildren of Rugles have been discovering the local industrial heritage through photography but also through visits to companies.
This is the apotheosis, the highlight of the show. For almost a year, the 4th grade students of Victor Hugo school in Rugles (Eure) "had the mission of discovering a piece of local history through its industrial heritage,
Taking photographs, visiting companies and discovering the industrial heritage, the pupils explored all the facets of the area.
Paper making at the eco-museum of the Papeteries de Vaux
The Périgord Vert has a very rich rural and industrial heritage. Purchased by the commune of Payzac in 1994, classified as a historic monument in 1996, the Vaux paper mill was originally a mill, later transformed into a forge, and it was in 1861 that paper was first produced. It ceased to function in 1968 and was rehabilitated under the guidance of the DRAC Aquitaine.
The Vaux paper mill is the last remaining evidence in France of an original paper production line of this type and importance: hollander breakers, mixer, purifiers, round form, felts, heating cylinders, boiler room.

La fabrication du papier à l'écomusée des Papeteries de Vaux
Le Périgord vert est doté d’un patrimoine rural et industriel très riche. Achetée par la commune de Payzac en 1994, classée Monument historique en 1996, la papeterie de Vaux était au départ un moulin, transformé ensuite en forge et c'est en 1861 que le papier a fait son apparition. Elle a cessé de fonctionner en 1968 et fut réhabilitée sous la houlette de la DRAC Aquitaine.
La papeterie de Vaux est le dernier témoignage en France d’une chaîne de papier originelle de ce type et de cette importance : piles hollandaises, malaxeur, épurateurs, forme ronde, feutres, cylindres chauffants, salle des chaudières.

Riga supports private museum initiatives
The City of Riga plans to provide financial support to private museum institutions in the Latvian capital. The aim is to encourage private collectors and entrepreneurs to consider setting up a private museum and to enrich the availability and range of such institutions in Riga. Funding will be available for projects until the end of the year.

Riga soutient les initiatives de musées privés
La ville de Riga prévoit d'apporter un soutien financier aux institutions muséales privées de la capitale lettone. L'objectif est d'encourager les collectionneurs et entrepreneurs privés à envisager la création d'un musée privé et d'enrichir la disponibilité et la gamme de ces institutions à Riga. Le financement sera disponible pour les projets jusqu'à la fin de l'année.

FerroForum
 The FerroForum was created with the aim of preserving and promoting the cultural, industrial and artisanal heritage as well as the know-how surrounding the creation of iron and steel.
The project is an integral part of the Esch 2022 - European Capital of Culture programme, but will be a long-term project in order to become a key player in this field. Established as a non-profit association, the FerroForum is located in the central workshop of the former Arbed Esch-Schifflange ironworks.

Le FerroForum a été créé avec le but de préserver et promouvoir le patrimoine culturel, industriel et artisanal ainsi que le savoir-faire autour de la création du fer et de l’acier. Le projet fait partie intégrante de la programmation d’Esch 2022 – Capitale européenne de la Culture, mais s’inscrira dans le long terme afin de devenir un acteur incontournable dans ce domaine. Établi sous forme d’une association sans but lucratif, le FerroForum est installé dans l’atelier central de l’ancienne usine sidérurgique d’Arbed Esch-Schifflange.

NETHERLANDS
Teylingens Steam Pumping Station
The paddle wheel pumping station with steam engine was built in 1871. In 1907, the existing steam engine was replaced by a tandem compound steam engine, about 80 hp. In 1953, the pumping station was equipped with an electric motor, with the steam engine to remain intact. Due to the Cold War, there was an obligation to keep an autonomous means of propulsion in addition to an electric drive for water management.
In 2008, a small group of volunteers took the first steps to restore the pumping station and open it to the public. In 2009, the Stichting tot behoud van het gemaal Teylingens (Foundation for the Preservation of the Teylingens Pumping Station) was established aiming at the restoration of the entire complex to working order.
In 2011, the volunteers managed to get the steam engine moving again. In addition, a restoration plan was drawn up for the building. Since 2011, a working group has been working at the pumping station every Saturday morning. On 17 May 2015, the reopening of the Teylingens Kamerik Steam Pumping Station took place after thorough restoration of the 1871 building
In 2019, the Stichting Watererfgoed Groot Woerden (Foubdation Water Heritage Woerden) was established as a continuation and legal successor of the foundation and as a platform for the the preservation of both the Teylingens pumping station and the Papekop-Diemerbroek diesel pumping station

Station de pompage à vapeur de Teylingens
La station de pompage à roue à godets mue avec une machine à vapeur a été construite en 1871. En 1907, la machine à vapeur existante a été remplacée par une machine à vapeur tandem-compound, d'environ 80 ch. En 1953, la station de pompage a été équipée d'un moteur électrique, la machine à vapeur restant intacte. En raison de la guerre froide, il était obligatoire au Pays-Bas de conserver un moyen de propulsion autonome en plus de la propulsion électrique dans la gestion des eaux.
En 2008, un petit groupe de bénévoles a pris les premières mesures pour sauver et restaurer la station de pompage et l'ouvrir au public. En 2009, la Stichting tot behoud van het gemaal Teylingens (Fondation pour le sauvegarde de la station de pompage de Teylingens) a été créée, avec le but det la remise en état de fonctionnement de l'ensemble.
En 2011, la Fondation a réussi à remettre la machine à vapeur en marche. En outre, un plan de restauration a été élaboré pour le bâtiment. Depuis 2011, un groupe de travail travaille à la station de pompage tous les samedis matin. Le 17 mai 2015, la réouverture de la station de pompage à vapeur de Teylingens Kamerik a eu lieu après une restauration complète du bâtiment de 1871.
En 2019, la Stichting Watererfgoed Groot Woerden (Fondation du patrimoine de l'eau de la région de Woerden) a été créée en tant que continuation et successeur légal des fondations pour préserver la station de pompage de Teijlingens et la station de pompage diesel de Papekop-Diemerbroek.

PORTUGAL
Old ceramics factory becomes arts, crafts and business centre
A €7 million private investment wants to save the history of an old ceramics factory in Alvarães, Viana do Castelo, and transform the industrial complex into an environmentally friendly arts, crafts and business centre.
The idea began to take shape in 2013, when the company acquired the property. The project moved forward in 2020 and has already recovered "about 50% of the 40,000 square metres" of the factory built in 1958 in Alvarães, in an investment of €2.5 million. The conclusion of the works is scheduled for 2024.

Un investissement privé de 7 millions d'euros vise à sauver l'histoire d'une ancienne usine de céramique à Alvarães, Viana do Castelo, et à transformer le complexe industriel en un centre d'art, d'artisanat et d'affaires respectueux de l'environnement.
L'idée a commencé à prendre forme en 2013, lorsque la société a acquis la propriété. Le projet a avancé en 2020 et a déjà récupéré "environ 50% des 40 000 mètres carrés" de l'usine construite en 1958 à Alvarães, dans un investissement de 2,5 millions d'euros. La fin des travaux est prévue pour 2024.

Fabricando el Sur
Convened by the Andalusian Coordinator of Industrial Heritage Associations, on Saturday 17th September, the Industrial Heritage and Public Works Association of Andalusia, Fabricando el Sur, was formally constituted. At the meeting, the objectives and programme of activities of the proposed association were presented and the board of directors was elected.
The board is chaired by the University of Seville professor Julián Sobrino.
The constitution took place in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo (Córdoba), in the old Sebastián Sánchez Market, by representatives of the promoting organisations and experts and researchers from Andalusia and abroad. The meeting was organised by the Asociación La Maquinilla de Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo and the Asociación para la Defensa del Patrimonio Industrial de Córdoba.

Valencia will restaure two chimneys
Valencia will invest 350.000 euros to restaure two chimneys from the early 20th century
One of the chimneys to be restored belonged to the Unión Alcoholera Española distillery and is located in the central gardens of La Alameda, near Gulliver Park. As well as reinforcing it and repairing the damage, it is planned to install a lightning conductor and a monumental lighting system.
The other chimney to be restored is located in calle del escultor Octavio Vicent and in 2010 suffered a detachment of rubble from the upper part, which is in the worst condition. In this case it belonged to a paper factory and stands out for its helical design.
Both chimneys have been declared ‘Bien de Relevancia Local’ (Asset of Local Relevance) as an example of the industrial past of the city of Valencia.

Fabricando el Sur
Convoquée par le coordinateur andalou des associations du patrimoine industriel, le samedi 17 septembre, l'association du patrimoine industriel et des travaux publics d'Andalousie, Fabricando el Sur, a été formellement constituée. Lors de la réunion, les objectifs et le programme d'activités de l'association proposée ont été présentés et le conseil d'administration a été élu.
Le conseil d'administration est présidé par le professeur Julián Sobrino de l'Université de Séville.
La constitution a eu lieu à Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo (Córdoba), dans l'ancien marché Sebastián Sánchez, par des représentants des organisations promotrices et des experts et chercheurs d'Andalousie et de l'étranger. La réunion a été organisée par l'Asociación La Maquinilla de Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo et l'Asociación para la Defensa del Patrimonio Industrial de Córdoba.

Valence va restaurer deux cheminées
Valence va investir 350.000 euros pour restaurer deux cheminées du début du 20ème siècle.

Only millwright in the north of England starts work at historic Gayle Mill in the Yorkshire Dales
The only millwright in the north of England is set to be taken on at one of Britain’s most historic mills to continue its restoration and help secure the future of the heritage asset.
Cultura Trust, the owners of 18th-century Gayle Mill, near Hawes, said taking on blacksmith and farrier Steve Green as a trainee millwright would help preserve such particularly rare traditional skills and knowledge.
The trust says millwrights are “an endangered species” in Britain, with none based north of Nottinghamshire, and that the shortage of skilled historic trades is a national concern.

Working in partnership with Historic England and funded by a grant from the Hamish Ogston Foundation, the trust will undertake a five-year heritage building skills programme, providing funding to encourage new trades people and re-skilling more experienced participants across the North of England.
After receiving a grant of £60,777 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Cultura has designed training and activities to upskill the trainee millwright and enable as many people to meet him and pick up skills.
The Science and Industry Museum in Manchester has received a £3million donation from The Law Family Charitable Foundation to fund the future of its iconic Power Hall gallery. The donation, the museum’s largest philanthropic gift to date, will support the gallery’s regeneration.
In recognition of The Law Family Charitable Foundation’s generosity and the significant benefit it will have for visitors, the gallery will be known as the Power Hall: The Law Family Gallery, when it reopens to the public in 2024. The Grade II listed Power Hall building was built in 1855 as the transhipment shed for Liverpool Road Station, the world’s first purpose-built intercity passenger railway station. It houses one of the UK’s largest collections of working stationary steam engines, most of them built in Manchester.
The gift is in addition to the £4.3 million given by the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to transform the whole museum’s environmental sustainability and place zero carbon technology at the heart of the museum’s visitor experience. £2.6 million from that grant will enable the Power Hall (currently undergoing urgent restoration thanks to £6 million from the DCMS) to reduce C02 emissions by 60% by 2030 through enhanced roof insulation and glazing to improve energy efficiency, an electric boiler and water source heat pumps to heat the space and power the historic engines sustainably, and a new building management system to monitor and control energy use of this iconic gallery.
Heritage Harbours
National Historic Ships UK, Historic England, and the Maritime Heritage Trust are working together on a ‘Heritage Harbours’ initiative to promote greater awareness and support for this maritime heritage. Heritage Harbours are places of historic maritime significance that retain original features, buildings, and facilities important for supporting historic vessels and maritime skills, which help connect the public to the UK’s maritime past.
‘Heritage Harbours’ is not a form of legal designation like listing a building or registering a park. Rather, the term underlines the historic importance and potential of harbours identified by this label. The Heritage Harbours concept emerged from a desire to safeguard and restore the infrastructure and skills necessary to support maritime heritage, including historic boats and ships still in use or preserved. All three organisations are committed to exploring how the Heritage Harbour concept might be developed and promoted in practice.
First introduced to the UK in 2019 by the Maritime Heritage Trust, working in partnership with National Historic Ships UK, the Heritage Harbours idea has been embraced and built upon by communities across the UK. This has seen the establishment of local steering groups, forums, and volunteer led initiatives, as well as investigatory work into what individual Heritage Harbours could offer in the future.
