Welcome to the SPARK Newsletter!

Delivered twice monthly, the SPARK: News e-bulletin provides members and other subscribers with valuable information through the following sections:

Teams, trust, and transformation: Relationships for better health

Since the first country GPs, medicine has celebrated the solo physician who takes care of patients. The "I, alone" mentality that was once endemic to medical culture is far too restrictive to handle the complex care needs of children requiring care today -- and their parents. What they need is a team.

Famed medical broadcaster and ER physician Dr. Brian Goldman knows all about that. In his new book, The Power of Teamwork: How We Can All Work Better Together, Brian takes readers on the journey from "Me" to "We" and why that is essential to making healthcare work better. And, he provides convincing evidence why patients and parents are essential members of the team.

Following his presentation, Dr. Goldman will sit down with Raissa Amany, Co-Executive Director, Young Canadians Roundtable on Health; Leah Thorpe, a nursing leader from Saskatchewan Health Authority, and Robert Bloom, father of two medically complex children and talk about what trust and teams really mean when the rubber hits the road.

Bullying Resources from AboutKidsHealth

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is November 20–26. AboutKidsHealth has resources for teens to help them identify bullying and know what to do if they or someone they know is being bullied or cyberbullied.
Bullying can take many forms including:
  • Physical assault
  • Spreading rumours about people or teasing in a mean way
  • Keeping certain people out of a group
  • Getting other people to bully someone else
  • Sending harassing or threatening messages online or by text message (cyberbullying)
  • Threatening to do any of the above things

If teenagers are being bullied, you can encourage them to stand up for themselves in a non-aggressive way, find friends who will support them and protect them, and act brave even if they do not feel it. If a teenager has been threatened or physically assaulted, they should call the police and report it as a crime.

To prevent cyberbullying, teens should avoid sharing their passwords and never share personal information with anyone online. Passwords should only be shared with a trusted adult such as a parent or caregiver.

AboutKidsHealth is SickKids’ health-education website and features more than 3,500 articles on a range of health topics. For more information on
bullying, cyberbullying and other health topics, visit www.aboutkidshealth.ca
