Welcome to FFFD 110

November 2022

I have just finished the Pete Wylie and The Mighty Wah! tour. We've been up and down the country playing to enthusiastic sold out crowds. It's been a real buzz to be out on a tour again and I've had a lot of fun working with Pete, Gavin on synths and Yousef on bass. We had some technical problems with computers and backing tracks at the start of the tour so we were really lucky to be able to bring a fantastic tech guy in called Ian who managed to iron out all the problems and the tour went from strength to strength.

We started off in Glasgow, then Birmingham. On to Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds.  The final two shows were in Sheffield and London. In the not too distant future I am going to do some drum charts for some of the songs and I think I'll do a Facebook Live show explaining and demonstrating some of the drum patterns used in different songs form the Wah! catalogue.
WHAT I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING RECENTLY
The MASTER DRUMMER
Expanded Edition by John Riley.

Actually I've not started working from this book yet.  I just got it recently and I'm very much looking forward to getting stuck in.
If you don't know John Riley, he's one of the great American jazz drummers.  This is his fourh book.  He's a wonderful educator and explains things very clearly.

WHAT I HAVE BEEN READING RECENTLY

This is the third book I've read in this series. It's about a branch of the secret intelligence service called Slow Horses. A branch of the service where all the people working there have been rejected from other departments for various reasons like leaving secret files on a train or having a gambling habit or alchoholism. The first book has been turned into an Apple TV series starring Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb the leader of the Slow Horses. A great read and also a very enjoyable, well done tv show.
WHAT I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY
RUFF DRAFT by J Dilla under the name of Jay Dee from 2007, originally an EP and then extended. Made in under a week for J Dilla to drive around and listen to in his car, hence the tittle RUFF DRAFT.  Abstract and experimental. I'm enjoying this!

Coming in the next couple of weeks I'll do a Facebook live show covering some of the songs from the Wah! tour.

16's anticlockwise around the kit. Note the stickings. Always going hand to hand with no crossover.  Go slowly to start with and get the sticking right first before trying to play it fast.
