Local agriculture operator making a difference
To celebrate #RiparianBufferMonth, we’re spotlighting local agriculture operator, Mark Heller! In 2018, Mark looked out over his property in Lancaster County and saw a muddy, heavily used meadow right up to the edge of a stream with eroding banks. He thought “this doesn’t look healthy.” But he didn’t see a way to readily correct the problems.
Since receiving help from Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center and other local partners, Mark has installed several conservation practices on his land, including a three-acre riparian forest buffer. He’s also participated in a pilot buffer establishment program and now offers tours of his property in Manheim.

Lancaster Clean Water Fund supports 9 inspirational projects in latest cycle
The Lancaster Clean Water Fund, administered by the Lancaster County Community Foundation and managed by the Lancaster Clean Water Partners, awarded $107,000 to nine clean water projects for the 2022 grant round (only including the Community Conservation and Implementation Small Grant categories). Each project is not only creative and collaborative, but focuses on ways to accomplish clean and clear water in Lancaster by 2040. Projects range from conservation practice implementation to educational outreach, signage, and events.
Congratulations to the following grantees: Chiques Creek Watershed Association, Conestoga River Club, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake, Lancaster Conservancy, Lancaster Science Factory, Londonderry Township, Mount Joy Borough, River Stewards Collaborative, and the Spanish American Civic Association.

Bioretention corridor complete in Lititz Borough
This month, the North Lane rain garden project, funded in 2021 through the Lancaster Clean Water Fund, was completed in Lititz Borough. The 0.02 acres of rain garden and 0.011 acres of vegetated swale will take excess water from North Lane, filter it while reducing the ponding on the roadway, and then discharge the clean water to nearby Lititz Run. These implemented practices complete a bioretention corridor on North Lane.

Above and beyond MS4
West Cocalico Township is going above and beyond its MS4 requirements to further improve local water quality! LandStudies recently restored 3,867 linear feet of degraded stream channel, removed 18,000 cubic yards of legacy sediment, restored more than eight acres of floodplain, and planted nearly 13 acres of riparian buffer. All of these practices will get us one step closer to achieving Lancaster's Countywide Action Plan.
