The Network's Achievements to date.

Migration MPTF

On 19 October, the third Migration MPTF Annual Consultative Forum gathered Member States, UN Network members, and stakeholders, to discuss the Fund’s alignment to the GCM’s guiding principles, with a particular emphasis on child sensitivity and the engagement of civil society, for which the Fund is currently in the process of developing specific guidance.

On this occasion, announcements of contributions were made by the United States ($5 million) and Mexico ($100,000, bringing their total contribution to $450,000). Donors, current and future, were called upon to develop imaginative ways to pool resources and generate matching pledges.

COP 27: Migration inclusion in climate action is an obligation, not an option.

Our shared future depends on realizing the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment for all. The interlinkages between climate change, human rights and migration are clear and the international community can no longer delay taking action to protect the environment, for present and future generations.

On the occasion of COP27, the UN Network on Migration released a statement calling on Member States to recognize the opportunities to work towards sustainable, rights-based mitigation and adaptation to climate change in order to address human mobility in this context.

Interview with Gita Sabharwal

In the first edition of a new series of interviews we will be conducting with Resident Coordinators across the world, we share the results of a discussion we had with Gita Sabharwal, UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand. In it, we discussed migrant workers’ contributions to socioeconomic development in Thailand, what being a GCM Champion means for the country, and how the country Network on Migration is supporting the government in implementing the four pledges they made at the International Migration Review Forum in May. Read the full interview here.

The Pledging Initiative

The Pledging Dashboard is now live on our website and can be accessed here.

This dashboard shows specific actions that Member States and stakeholders have committed to undertake to advance the implementation of the GCM.

Climate change and migration feature prominently amongst the pledges received. For instance, the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group representing 97 cities around the world committed, among other activities, to promote a green and just climate transition at the city-level, in partnership with migrants and affected communities.

Support to country-level UN system

Under the workstream, Implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration: Support for UN Country Teams, the Network’s Global Facilitation Team is starting to rollout in-person workshops to support UN Country Teams to integrate migration into planning at country-level. The first was held in Beirut on 4-5 October 2022 with the newly formed Network on Migration in Lebanon. The next will be in El Salvador on 8-9 November. We have thus far received a further 8 requests for facilitated workshops.

Based on the Facilitator’s Guide, these trainings help UN partners better engage governments and other relevant stakeholders in implementing the GCM. To respond to the increasing training requests from country Networks, we will look to strengthen our capacity at the regional-level. To this end, a regional Training of Trainers will take place in late 2022 or early 2023.

For more information, or to request support, please contact the Network’s Global Facilitation Team, co-led by UNDP, IOM and OHCHR at UNNMGlobalFacilitationTeam@iom.int.

Launch of the Doha Initiative: an Inter-Regional Dialogue on the GCM

24-25 October 2022

The launch was convened by ESCWA, IOM, the League of Arab States (LAS) and ILO, in the framework of the regional Issue Based Coalition on migration.

Discussions looked at the impact of climate change on migration patterns and trends to and from the Arab Region, and how these patterns affect different vulnerable groups on the move, including asylum seekers, refugees, internally displaced persons, and migrant workers.

Organizers and participants highlighted promising practices across the region pertaining to the governance of climate-induced migration and displacement.
