Principal's Message

Dear Lakeside Elementary Families,

This Friday we look forward to a special celebration honoring those who serve and who have served our military. Once again, we will be celebrating Veterans Day with a Lakeside Veterans Day assembly.  We would love to invite families to join us for our assembly on Friday, November 11 starting at 1:00 p.m. in the Lakeside gym. This year’s assembly theme is bravery and honor. Each year we select a mentor text to read as a school and one that is interwoven into the assembly. This year’s mentor text is Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion by Jane Barclay. Please enjoy some of the Lakeside staff reading this book. We look forward to a wonderful and patriotic celebration honoring all of our brave heroes! We ask all students and staff to wear red, white, and blue on November 11. We are still looking for a few volunteers to help with the celebration. Please sign up here if you are interested in helping.

Important Safety Reminders
Each morning and afternoon many vehicles drop off and pick up students around the property of Lakeside. For the safety of everyone, we ask that you please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Student drop off in the morning begins at 8:10 a.m. when supervision is in place.

  • Please use parking spots intended for cars along Hall Street to drop off and pick up students. Students should NOT be dropped off/picked up in the middle of Hall Street. If parking on Hall Street is not available, please utilize the safe drop off/pick up areas on Anderson Drive and encourage your child(ren) to use the crosswalk. The Burchard or Breton/Hall lots are also available.

  • In order to allow space for the Woodcliff and Gilden Woods buses to park at their designated times, please refrain from parking in the “Buses Only” spots along Hall Street.

  • The Breton/Hall lot is the primary parking lot for many of our staff. Please use this lot as a “Drop-and-Go” lane only before school.

  • Please adhere to signage and follow general traffic rules in the Burchard parking lot. We have recently had some close calls with students and staff due to high speeds and parking in unmarked areas. The parking spots closest to the building are intended for staff while those in the west wing of the lot are for student drop off and pick up. This layout helps to create the least amount of congestion as possible.

Kindergarteners Celebrate the 50th Day of School
Last Friday Lakeside Elementary kindergarten students and teachers celebrated the 50th day of the school year with their annual Sock Hop! Check out these adorable photos of everyone dancing and singing in style!

Cool Weather Reminders
It’s that time of year when the temperatures are dropping. Please make sure that your child(ren) has a coat with them each day to wear outdoors during drop off, recess, and pickup. As we head into these colder and wetter months, please help your child enjoy outdoor recess by ensuring he/she is dressed appropriately for the weather. We go outside for recess two times per day, weather permitting. If the wind chill drops below zero degrees, students will remain inside for recess. Snow pants and boots are required for students who want to leave the paved areas of the playground when there is snow. Certain areas of the playground may be “closed” when it is extremely wet and muddy. Thank you for preparing your child to enjoy outdoor recess!

Harry Potter Read Alouds Continue This Week
Our third reading of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone will take place on Thursday, November 10. We will meet each Thursday until the book is complete. All students in grades 3-5 may participate in the Harry Potter readings from 11:40 a.m.- 12:05 p.m. in the Learning Commons. Our 3rd and 4th grade students should bring a sack lunch on reading days. Our 5th grade students will participate during their lunch recess if they choose to join.

  Additional Information

Santa Claus Girls Flyer
Santa Claus Girls (SCG) is a non-profit organization that provides both toys and clothing items to children ages 12 and under in time for the holidays. Their mission is to ensure that children ages 12 and under do not go without gifts during this time of celebration. Presents are gift-wrapped and delivered to the children’s residence on Saturday, December 10 by volunteer drivers to be received by a parent or caregiver. Online registration is currently available at http://www.santaclausgirls.org  Several languages can be selected on the website for ease of registration. Ongoing updates are posted to the Santa Claus Girls Facebook page. If you have any questions regarding the program or gift distribution, please visit santaclausgirls.org. More details are available on their flyer linked here.

Volunteer Consent Form
In order to volunteer in our school buildings or school-sponsored events, EGRPS has a process that requires volunteers to complete a background check. If you have not completed the Volunteer Consent Form via registration through Skyward, click here to do so. This form is not available in the office and must be completed online. It is recommended that volunteers complete this form as far in advance as possible to ensure the background check process can be completed prior to the date of volunteering. The completion of this fillable form online ensures that a badge will be in the office for you to wear when you check in as a school volunteer. It is required that this form is filled out each year. To best support the students and staff as a volunteer, refrain from bringing younger siblings with you when serving in a volunteer role.

Volunteers: Driving Students on Field Trips
In order for any parent/guardian/volunteer to drive students on a field trip, they must have an approved volunteer consent form on file that includes submission of a driver’s license and an unrestricted driving record.

Please note: Regardless of when an incident occurred, if a driving record includes any of the following citations or violations, the volunteer will be restricted from driving: alcohol or drug-related charges, points, excessive speeding, reckless driving, etc. If a driving record contains any of the above listed citations, you will receive an email notifying you that you are restricted from driving students other than your own.

Additionally, individuals with an out-of-state driver’s license are unable to be approved for transporting any students other than their own as we are not able to complete a full background check without a Michigan driver’s license.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we review, consider, and ensure the safety of our students.

Important Choir Information

We will be ordering shirts for choir members shortly! The design is the same as last year. Please fill out this form at your earliest convenience with your student's name and t-shirt size. If your student still has their choir shirt and they can continue wearing it this year, you do not need to fill out the form.

Lakeside PTO

 Thank you!
Thanks to everyone who bought and planted bulbs last week.  It was fun to see the students pick out the perfect spot to plant their bulbs.  Lakeside will look gorgeous in the spring.

Scholastic Book Fair
Calling all readers!  Lakeside’s annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held November 28 - December 2.  Students will have opportunities to shop during lunch recess and after school throughout the week.  As a special treat Mrs. Thelen and her friends are hosting Bedtime Stories Tuesday, November 29 from 6:15pm - 7:00pm.  That evening students are invited to come to school wearing their pajamas and listen to stories while parents shop at the book fair.

Parent-teacher conferences. Halloween. Daylight savings time. Your kids’ teachers have had a challenging couple of weeks. Why not reward them with a STAR Award?

STAR (Staff Teacher Appreciation and Recognition) Awards honor outstanding teachers and staff members for everything they do for our students. For a donation of $25 or more to the Foundation, we’ll produce a STAR Award for your favorite teacher or staff member and either present it to them or give it to you to present it yourself. To honor a teacher or staff member quickly and easily, just visit the STAR Awards page on egrsf.org.

With fall sports wrapping up, you can also honor your children’s coaches with a Gerken Appreciation Award
