November Theme: The Power of Gratitude

November is traditionally a month where we take time to reflect and be grateful. And, indeed, it is our staff theme for the month as well. Why not take a moment to express your appreciation for being a part of a fantastic team, program or school? During the month of November, we will publish your gratitudes in The Notebook! Send a short video or narrative with a photo attached to communications@isd742.org.

Gratitude is defined as the state of being grateful: thankfulness. It is the feeling or showing of appreciation and kindness. Sincere expressions of gratitude take little time, cost nothing, and can go a long way in creating a positive environment at home and in the workplace.

Why Gratitude Matters

An article in the Harvard Business Review states in the general population only 15% of employees say thank you at work, and 35% say their managers never say thank you. However, if a person’s contributions are acknowledged as useful and appreciated, they are more likely to help again later.

In the spirit of gratitude, here are some tips about how to say thanks and why you should show gratitude toward your colleagues.

Why Say Thanks

  • 90% of individuals see a personal thank you for work well done as very important.
  • 81% of individuals would work harder for a boss who was more grateful.
  • More than 50% would stay with their organization longer if they felt appreciated by their manager, according to BizJournals.com.
  • HR Online states psychological research shows a consistent and strong association between gratitude and level of happiness; meaning more positive emotions, better relationships, better health, and more resilience from stressful events.
  • Genuinely grateful people have healthier hearts, stronger immunity and lower blood pressure, according to Harvard Health. Continue reading

SHOUT OUT

I would like to give a huge shout out to Josh Jones, custodian at Oak Hill! He does a fabulous job of keeping our classrooms clean. He is always willing to help us teachers when we need anything. He asks us if there's anything else we need or if there are any suggestions we have. He goes above and beyond! We are very grateful to have Josh at Oak Hill!

I would like to give a shout out to Beth Baker, our Special Education building substitute teacher at Apollo. She has been nothing short of amazing from day one of the school year. She has been part of a team who supports one of our teachers out on leave. Beth stepped in and created lesson plans, got to know students, navigated Skyward (what she could get to), graded student work, built relationships with staff, and jumped in wherever and whenever she was needed. If there is a person that has shown their salt this fall, it's Beth. We cannot thank Beth enough for her willingness to join our Apollo family and support our special education students. She is a treasure, and we are grateful.

Misconceptions About Joining Omada

Is something still holding you back from joining Omada? Check out these five common misconceptions about Omada—debunked by participants themselves.

1. It’s a diet program.

  • You’ll gain tools and support to lead a healthier life. No gimmicks. No fads.
  • “This is not a diet, but a tool to use to help change bad habits into good. A place to track your meals and snacks without trying to remember where you left that notebook.”
    —Cassandra, Gig Harbor WA

2. It’s too time-consuming.

  • Got a few hours a week? You’ve got this.
  • “What do you have to lose? I felt like life was so stressful that I couldn’t handle “one more thing” but the pace of the Omada program is perfect for busy people.” — Ashley, Pullman, WA

3. Daily tracking is a pain.

  • Many participants go from hating it to loving it. (Really.)
  • “I had my doubts about how effective a virtual platform with a coach who has never met me would be. I was pleasantly surprised at how effective tracking your food and exercise can be for motivation.” — Megan, Chesapeake, VA

4. Group settings are intimidating.

  • You can be as discreet as you like on the online message boards.
  • “I understand the process of eating healthy and working out, but I don’t have the willpower to do it effectively alone. Omada gave me the tools and group support needed for success.” — Brian, Baton, Rouge, LA

5. What’s the catch? This can’t be actually free.

  • If you’re eligible to join, the program is covered. Really.
  • “I was not expecting much if anything from this program. I signed up mostly for the free scale. But I was surprised at how accountable the connected scale and food tracking made me, and the rapid progress I saw.” — Omada member, Austin, TX
