Which is Right for Me?

November 16, 2022
1.5 Board of Social Work CEU eligible; will apply for 1.5 CLE

Are you or someone you know considering guardianship for a younger adult with disabilities? This session is for you! Anita Raymond (Director, Center for Excellence in Supported Decision Making) along with special guests Jean Hauff (Self-Advocate, Social Media Consultant) and Mary Hauff (Family Supporter, MN Consortium Higher Education Consortium Co-leader) will be discussing important pre-petitioning considerations such as: statutory requirements regarding less restrictive alternatives; Supported Decision Making (SDM) and who can benefit; how SDM can alleviate the need for guardianship and/or conservatorship; unintended consequences of guardianship; how to build on a person's abilities, support teams, and available systems to address vulnerabilities as alternatives to guardianship. Jean Hauff and Mary Hauff will share their experiences in using SDM and Jean's experiences as a college student and young adult living her best life.

Objectives:

  • Describe statutory requirements to try supported decision making and other less restrictive alternatives to guardianship prior to petitioning for the appointment of a guardian

  • Explain unintended consequences of guardianship and the importance of avoiding unnecessary guardianships

  • List at least three resources to help decide whether guardianship is necessary

  • Explore how supported decision making has helped people live their best lives and avoid guardianship
