NEW YEAR, HISTORIC NEW SESSION

It’s the start of a new year and for legislators, that means the start of a new legislative session where the rubber hits the road for bills that have been months (and sometimes years) in the making.

Due to the election year and redistricting in 2022, and some surprising election wins, the 2023 session will be a little more exciting than usual. This may be the start of my third term in office and my fifth legislative session, but a few big changes to Colorado’s General Assembly have me feeling like this is a new beginning. For starters, it was a historical election year for women. Not only do women make up the majority of the legislature this year, but they have also taken the top three leadership positions in the House of Representatives. I was historically elected as Majority Caucus Co-Chair, as a first for any transgender person.  We also have the most culturally diverse set of legislators in our state’s history. And with the greatest number of LGBTQ+ members in history, we are very close to seeing representation that mirrors our state’s actual demographic makeup. As many of you already know, I am very fond of saying, “representation matters.” I believe the new cohort of legislators will bring new conversations and new policies into the spotlight that will truly benefit all of Colorado’s residents.

If you’d like to follow our work at the Capitol, here are a few ways to read, listen, or watch:

As always, I’ll be sending out weekly newsletter updates featuring my bills and all the big topics of conversation under the Dome. You can also join me for one of my constituent events where we can dig into the issues that are important to you or reach out to me with any comments, questions, or concerns along the way.

Looking forward to a great 2023 session!

Speaker Julie McCluskie opened our historic session emphasizing that this legislature will serve every Colorado Dream by prioritizing affordable housing, mental and behavioral health, education and child care, gun violence prevention, and that fundamental life-force: water. Coloradans know how much water matters in this state, and those surrounding us who depend on our mighty Colorado River. This legislature recognizes the urgency of the climate crisis and will make historic efforts to prioritize conservation and protection of our beloved outdoor spaces.

Additionally, as this country faces a reproductive healthcare crisis, the Speaker outlined plans to protect providers and access to abortion care, and ensure accurate medical information is available to patients seeking care by keeping misleading pregnancy centers in check.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Speaker McCluskie as our inspiration for the session: “As we craft our legislation, offer amendments, and vote on bills, I want us all to recognize not only the historic diversity of this body, but also the importance of centering policies that are anti-racist and which combat antisemitism and hatred targeted at Colorado’s LGBTQ community. It is not enough just to listen and hear people from diverse backgrounds, we must advance policies that reflect the experiences and priorities they bring to this chamber.”
