4.57 million register for National Postgraduate Entrance Examination (CHN)

4.57 million people have registered for China’s National Postgraduate Entrance Examination for 2023, up by 21.2% compared to 2021. Research has shown that the tuition fees for some postgraduate studies, particularly for MBA programs, have increased for some higher education institutes.
 
National Civil Servants exam open for registration, record high number of opening positions(CHN)

China’s 2023 National Civil Servants Examination opened for registration on 25 October 2022, almost 70% of opening positions are reserved for recent graduates. The number of opening positions increased by 18.75 compared to the previous year. It is estimated that a record high number of 2 million people will register for the test, up from the 1.3 to 1.5 million in past years.

Hong Kong teachers with serious ‘defects’ in character and conduct could face lifetime classroom ban, education secretary warns

Teachers found to have serious “defects” in their character or conduct could be barred from the classroom for life if draft amendments to the Hong Kong code of conduct for the profession are approved, according to Hong Kong’s education secretary.
 
Newly joined, promoted teachers in HK public schools required to join study tour to mainland: SAR govt

Newly joined teachers and those with an eye on a promotion in all the publicly-funded schools in Hong Kong are required to join a study tour to the Chinese mainland, Secretary for Education told local media on 22 October.

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023 released

QS Quacquarelli Symonds released the first QS World University Rankings: Sustainability (2023) on October 26 which includes 700 universities. There were 33 Australian universities and 10 universities from mainland China ranked. Peking University (118th ) was the highest ranked university in China, and UNSW and the University of Sydney (both 5th) were the highest ranked universities in Australia.
 
Chinese university sets Guinness record in drone flight duration

Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ research team has set a Guinness record of 1 hour 30 minutes and 4.98 seconds for the longest flight duration of an ornithopter, an unmanned aircraft that flies by flapping its mechanical wings.
 

Australia
Survey says Australia a top choice among prospective international students

A global IDP research survey has found that Australia is now the second-most preferred destination for international students after Canada. Canada (27%) and Australia (25%) were the first and second choice for surveyed students, respectively. The survey showed that the January 2022 announcement on lifting caps on number of hours that international students would work while studying and safety are the main reasons for Australia’s rising popularity.

Revision of law on protection of women passed, stresses gender equality, dignity

On 30 October, China's top legislature passed the revision to the Law on the Protection of Rights and Interests of Women, specifying measures to promote gender equality and ensure that women enjoy equal rights with men in the political, economic, cultural, social and other fields. The revised law will come into effect on January 1, 2023.
