Teledentistry Talking Points to discuss with your Legislator:
GDHA is working with the House and Senate on a teledentistry bill that will help expand and improve dental care for people statewide.
In many states where the supervising dentist is not physically present within the treatment setting, patient information may be sent remotely through secure electronic means to the dentists for their review and evaluation. This is known as Telehealth for Dentistry, or Teledentistry.
Teledentistry may take several forms, such as secure real-time two-way audio, visual telecommunication or other electronic communications.
Teledentistry facilitates assessment, diagnosis, consultation, treatment planning and care management of patients’ oral health care by professional health care providers practicing within their scope of practice.
Teledentistry includes interactions between the patient and the dentist, dentist-to-dentist, dentist-to-physician/nurse and dentist-to-dental hygienist or caregiver.
Georgia has engaged with telemedicine for more than 20 years. It is available in all 159 counties and has become one of the most widely accepted solutions for increasing access to care.
The Georgia Health Care Reform Task Force said “ the state needs new models of health care delivery, which are more flexible, less capital-intensive, and take advantage of new technologies to deliver care in a timely and efficient manner.” - The expansion of teledentistry under the umbrella of telehealth provides one solution toward achieving that goal.
