SARNIA LEGION BRANCH 62 NEWSLETTER

Veterans Crosswalk Opening

Sarnia Legion Branch 62 is excited to have had the opportunity to work with the City of Sarnia for the design of the Veterans Park Crosswalk.  Les Jones, President of Sarnia Legion Branch 62 said “as evidence of the communities’ efforts to remember, recognize, and honour the sacrifices made by the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans Park has become a historical museum and cherished location for the community to enjoy for generations to come.”

Earlier this year, a motion brought forward by Sarnia Councillor Brian White and unanimously approved by council, and lead to the design and installation of the Veterans Crosswalk.  “It was a great honour to bring this motion forward” said White. “As years pass, it becomes more important to find new ways to start conversations about and pay tribute to those who served, and who’s sacrifices offer us true freedom to this very day.”

Once the crosswalk was approved, the Corporation of the City of Sarnia turned to Sarnia Legion Branch 62 for the design. “An initial suggestion was to have the image of the poppy on the Crosswalk; however, the Royal Canadian Legion is of the belief that it is a dishonour to walk or drive on this symbol of remembrance” said Jones, regarding the look of the design for the Crosswalk.  “Therefore, you will see the poppy on signage as you approach the crosswalk.” The red and white stripes were chosen for several reasons.  In 1921, King George V, declared that red and white are the national colours of Canada.  The colour red and white also depicts the colours of our current Canadian flag.  The colour red further represents the blood shed by Veterans in the service of Canada.  The colour shite is recognized as the colour of peace, for which we all hope to achieve.

Lastly, a banner with the words “Lest We Forget” is placed before the Crosswalk.  ““Lest We Forget” is a line from a poem written by Rudyard Kipling in 1897, titled “Recessional” and is a phrase commonly used in War Remembrance Services.”

The dedication of the Crosswalk will commence on Remembrance Day, on November 11 at the crosswalk, as we march,  located at the corner of Wellington and Christina St, in front of the Sarnia Library.
