An experimental small-scale social network created by Caroline Sinders and Trammell Hudson, the Potato Internet envisions the internet in times of climate emergency and the global energy crisis.
When imagining alternatives for today’s extractivist online platforms, the common criticism often comes down to: "but they don’t scale up". But what if the future of the internet is all about scaling down?
In Potato Internet, the small scale allows the artists to build a functioning social network from scratch, rethinking all layers of the system, from hardware and protocols to user experience.
Besides potatoes as energy source, the artists experiment with e-waste and recycled materials. The governance and codes of conduct of the network draw on Sinders' work on the Feminist Data Set.

Kun nykyisille resursseja riistäville verkkoalustoille ehdotetaan vaihtoehtoja, usein kuultu kritiikki on, etteivät ne skaalaudu ylös. Mutta entä jos internetin tulevaisuus onkin pienessä mittakaavassa?
Potato Internetin taiteilijoille pieni mittakaava antaa mahdollisuuden rakentaa toimiva sosiaalinen verkosto määrittäen uusiksi koko järjestelmän - laiteympäristöstä tiedonsiirtoon ja käyttäjäkokemukseen.
Energialähteenä toimivien perunoiden lisäksi projekti hyödyntää elektronista jätettä ja kierrätysmateriaaleja. Verkoston eettinen ohjeistus perustuu Sindersin Feminist Data Set-projektiin.

EMAP residency call 2023 - apply by Nov 30!
The European Media Art Platform offers residencies for artists, artist duos, collectives or other artistic collaborations working in the fields of digital art, media art and bioart. The two-month residencies will be hosted by 15 European organisations and the 2023 special host Hexagram (CA).
The selected artists will receive a 10.000 € budget, with travel and accommodation costs covered by the host. The projects will be presented in EMAP festivals and exhibitions and can participate in the touring programme with EMAP partner organisations.
European Media Art Platform -verkosto kutsuu residensseihin digitaalisen taiteen, mediataiteen ja biotaiteen tekijöitä, kollektiiveja ja yhteistyöprojekteja. Kahden kuukauden residensseistä vastaa EMAPin 15 jäsenorganisaatiota sekä vuoden 2023 erikoisvieras Hexagram (CA).
Valitut taiteilijat saavat käyttöönsä 10.000 euron budjetin, matka- ja majoituskulut katetaan lisäksi. Residenssiproduktiot saavat ensi-iltansa verkoston festivaaleilla ja näyttelyissä sekä osallistuvat EMAP-kumppanien kanssa tuotettavaan kiertueohjelmaan.
