Chapter News: November 2022

Dean's Message

I was late buying Halloween candy. I went to the Walmart around the corner from WBPC on the 31st, looking for a deal, and Halloween was GONE. The orange and black had been replaced by red and green.

As church musicians, we shift to Christmas mode even before the retailers do. As the season approaches, Christmas becomes the most stressfulrather than wonderfultime of the year. But before you light the first Advent candle on November 27th, remember that although we are the leaders, players, composers, and planners of music and worship, we don't work in a vacuum.

Find time to sincerely thank the singers, instrumentalists, clergy, and congregants who make our vocation possible. Should we thank people for doing their jobs, or for following through on their commitments? Of course, we should!  For me, I delight in getting recognition, even if it is "my job," and I bet you do too. So spread the love, and say thanks.

Jim Adams, Dean

Dr. Janette Fishell

"So many stops, so little time: Tips on registering any piece on just about any organ"

Janette Fishell is professor of music in organ and chair of the Organ Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she teaches applied organ and organ pedagogy. She appears by arrangement with Karen McFarlane Artists.

Location:
Lutheran Church of the Ascension (Gallery) 120 Bull St. Savannah, GA 31401

Note: the gallery is not handicapped accessible. There is vertical access to the Nave (second floor) and the presentation will be broadcast over the PA system.

Call for players!

Dr. Fishell writes:

'I am working on my class and it would be helpful if I knew if there were volunteers to play (anything - pieces, hymns, anthems, etc.) I want to emphasize that people can also just BRING repertoire, preludes/postludes, hymns, anthems, and put me on the spot by asking ME how I would register them on your instrument. I want this to be informative and useful but also relaxed - no one should be timid about playing as this is about registration.

"Also, perhaps it would be most useful if everyone brought along a specification of their organ with enough copies for everyone? That way we can look at the variety of stop lists and discuss how one person's choices will differ from another's and how we all must adapt as we play various instruments even in our own cities."
