You are stronger than you think.

In case you needed to hear this today, here’s a passage from my book, I Want To Remember This. It’s titled “Unbelievable”.

—-

Do you know how strong a day-old infant’s grip is? I swear, if they were holding onto a line in that tiny hand, they could tow a 3-ton pickup truck.

I am shifting into a new season of motherhood. As I write, my firstborn is eighteen years and a day old.

He was born vulnerable, yes, but also incredibly strong. I’ve tried so hard to be strong for him all these years—it’s time I let go and trust him to carry the weight of his personhood, the joys and the pains, on his own. (Truth is, he always has.)

You and I were born strong, too. We’ve carried a lot, even though the bruises we suffer in our years on earth have a way of making us doubt or forget this.

Look around today for signs that you are more capable, resilient, and able to find and create beauty when the way forward is unclear. You started off strong, and you’ve built muscle over time, even when, especially when, you didn’t feel strong at all.

Think of a time when you thought, “I can’t” but could and did, even if you didn’t want to.

And let that remembrance nourish you.

i believe you are strong enough to be vulnerably present to life’s fullness.

I believe you are unbelievable.

P.S. Here’s a song I find endlessly inspiring for looking at the past with kindness.

P.P.S. Please enjoy these thoughtful conversations if you haven’t already—I’m on the podcast Collective Wisdom with Cat Preston, and on Honey Gone Nuts, Dingding Hu. Both hosts are amazingly insightful and drew great stories of resilience out of me. You might find comfort in what I shared.
