In the midst of transition, all of us at DCC are doing our best to “tend to the people and places around us.” As Advent approaches, and the days get shorter and colder, Session hopes we can all listen to nature to rest
and recharge.
We wish to update you on the progress we’ve made to support and care for our hard working DCC staff members and congregant volunteers who have worked above and beyond!
Interim Pastor Search Process Update
Session is thrilled to announce that we are finalizing negotiations with an interim pastor candidate!!! We believe that this candidate is well-equipped to help us navigate our transition, and expect to be able to make an announcement soon introducing you to this individual in more detail. This pastor would not be able to begin at DCC until mid-January, so we have worked to provide pastoral support until that time.
Welcome Rev. Dr. Sarah Reyes Gibbs
In our last update to you, we shared that Session had approved a search for a transitional consultant. After reaching out to over ten pastors about their willingness to serve in this capacity, and speaking in depth with three pastors, Session is enthusiastic to share that Rev. Dr. Sarah Reyes Gibbs has agreed to serve as our Bridge Pastor for Transition.
Rev. Dr. Sarah Reyes Gibbs will be a temporary part-time Pastor with a focus on supporting Session, Ministry Chairs, and Personnel. Pastor Eunbee as Acting Head of Staff will continue to provide support to our staff. Pastor Sarah will work with us in this capacity until January 31, 2023.
Read the full letter here. Members of the Interim Pastor Nominating Committee (IPNC) will announce the update on Sunday and hard copies of the letter will be available at the back of the Sanctuary.

Worship All Together: One Sunday Service at 10:30 a.m. Live-Streamed on the DCC YouTube Channel
Sunday's Focus:Matthew 14:22-36 In Matthew 14, Jesus sent his disciples by themselves on a boat, and they were caught in a storm in the middle of the night. The experienced fishermen exhausted all their strength rowing in the dark. The gospel says that Jesus walked on water to meet them, and they screamed not so much from the storm as they were terrified by Jesus. Pastor Eunbee will reflect on lessons we can learn from discipleship, hardship, fear, and remaining open to God’s presence even in the things that terrify us.

Often when your child is diagnosed with issues, you may feel all alone on an island. You are not alone. This group will meet monthly to learn from and support one another in the experience of parenting exceptional kids in a world designed mainly for typical kids.
If you need childcare or wish to join via Zoom. you must sign up in advance. We will arrange for childcare for up to 8 children. Donations to offset the cost for child care providers are welcome but not necessary. A Zoom link will be provided in your registration confirmation. Please sign up here.
If you do not need childcare and plan to attend in person, there is no need to sign up in advance. Just come to the group!
This group is facilitated by Elisa Stone, a parent of non-typical kids, who is trained in developmental early childhood education. Elisa taught for UC Davis, Center for Early Childhood Excellence, ran a preschool for 20 years, and was on the DJUSD's Superintendent's subcommittee for special needs. Elisa is now the Minister of Congregational Care at DCC.

COVID Update: DCC's Session held a lengthy discussion regarding COVID precautions at it's October 18th meeting.
The current precautions, including N95, KN95 or KN94masks at the worship service, will remain in place with the following changes:
1. We will serve communion indoors. Participants will be invited forward to receive communion, but will return to their seats before removing their mask and consuming the bread and juice. We will also provide an outdoor option for those who feel more comfortable outdoors.
2. The Chancel Choir will remove their masks to sing the anthem.
In the event of an exposure to COVID, please follow the Centers for Disease Control guidance. Wear a mask and test on Day 6 following the exposure. Read more here.
If you or a child in your family has a fever, please stay home. If you have a cough or any other symptoms, please test for COVID before participation in a DCC event.
Stay up-to-date on COVID vaccines and get a booster when eligible. (It's also time to get a seasonal flu shot.)
On Campus – Masking Highly Recommended
DCC's Session continues to HIGHLY RECOMMEND, but not require, masking indoors as we return to our in-person activities. Having said that, groups are encouraged to discuss and agree to the precautions they will take so that everyone in the group feels safe. Groups may choose to require more, but not less, stringent precautions.
For all who attend Sunday School, we require proof of full vaccination, including booster shots for all who
are eligible.
Discovery Time (DT) is a short in-person Bible story time offered in the Sanctuary during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service, and is followed by Sunday School. Children attending DT will be asked to follow the same COVID precautions as those attending the service: i.e., full vaccination (as eligible) or testing within 72 hours of events at DCC, and high-quality masks. Everyone age 2 and over will be required to wear an N95, KN95 or KF94 mask while indoors. We have additional masks of this kind on hand.
For children who do not wish to go into the Sanctuary for DT, or who cannot be vaccinated or test, childcare will be provided outdoors and DT will be available for you to watch from home on the DCC YouTube channel. For all children attending Sunday School or other childcare sessions, please be sure to bring proof of vaccination for your children, or email a photo of their card tokate@dccpres.org.
All in the Family Please join us for a celebration of the life of Rachel Kessler on Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall. The service will also be live-streamed on the Davis Community Church YouTube Channel.
The flowers in the Sanctuary on Sunday are given by the Kessler family in loving memory of their
"moma-san", Rachel.
I am so grateful for the wonderful hosts Cynthia Gerber, Deborah Jory, Carole Crofts and Fred Bahr, Jim and Jan Soller, Janis and Alex Cooke, and Valerie Durbin and Wally Beckman for their amazing help in welcoming the students from CA House into their homes. The Beckman’s went above and beyond as their water heater flooded the day before, so they went to CA house with homemade dinner in hand to provide for the students. You all care deeply to connect with our college students and this was a concrete way to do that. I am most grateful!!
Please hold in prayer Peg Gerould, who is traveling today to Mexico to meet with the coffee farmers of Café Justo in Chiapas and to celebrate their 20th year. We sell the coffee to provide direct support to the coffee growers. It is more-than-fair trade! We are looking forward to a visit by Mark Adams and Miriam Maldonado Adams in 2023. We will have an opportunity to learn more about their amazing border ministry, Frontera de Cristo. Blessings upon your travels and mission Peg!

Meals Needed for Davis' Winter Shelter
Planning for this season's Winter Shelter is underway. HEART of Davis (formerly IRWS) is coordinating the meals for the 10 occupants of the 512 Fifth Street congregate shelter (on D Street right across the street from DCC by the fire station). The shelter will be open for about four months from the end of November through the end of March.
The Compassion, Peace, and Justice Ministry (CPJ) has committed DCC to provide the meals for the weeks of January 22-28, 2023 and March 5-11, 2023. We are being asked to provide the evening meal each day for these 2 weeks. Each evening, the meal needs to be delivered to the 5th Street shelter between 6:00 and 6:15 pm. They would prefer a hot meal. We can also include sides, such as bread/roll, salad, fruit, dessert. Volunteers will be asked to prepare the food and deliver it to the shelter - no serving and no cleanup will be necessary.
After the service this coming Sunday, I will be at Coffee Connect to provide further details and with a sign-up sheet for the January week. DCC has been providing support for our local winter shelter for over 10 years. If you are interested in providing a meal (or parts of a meal) for our unhoused neighbors staying in the shelter, please see me on Sunday or contact me directly.
The Gallery: Children's Art Show
You are invited to a new “Children’s Art Show” exhibit in the DCC Gallery. Opening after church on October 30, the exhibit includes art by talented children in four DCC families, including paintings of fanciful creatures, whimsical sculpture, and Dia de los Muertos masks.
Earthquakes are unpredictable and can occur with little to no warning. That's why it is so important to make sure your family and coworkers are prepared.
Know what to do when an earthquake hits.
DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON. Stay where you are until the shaking stops.
If inside, stay inside. If outside, stay outside, but try to move away from building and power lines. If in a vehicle, pull over and stop, but in a clear area away from trees or overpasses if possible.
After the shaking stops, look to move to a safer area.
Stay safe after an earthquake.
Expect aftershocks to occur in the following minutes, hours, and days. DROP, COVER and HOLD ON each time you feel an aftershock.
Check yourself for injuries. Get first aid treatment for yourself before attempting to help others.
Check the building for damage. If you are in a damaged building or smell gas, evacuate and move
far away.
Look for and extinguish small fires.

The Personal Challenge of Loneliness
Lonesome? Lonely? Isolated? Don’t know what to do when personal health and safety are in question and isolation is taking its toll?
A pooch, a pat, a promise, or a partner might make a difference, at least momentarily. Yet what could help YOU sustain spirit and verve in the face of a prolonged pandemic and possibly aggravated personal circumstances?
Dr. Gitane will provide some tips and perspective. It’s not for everybody, yet everybody might benefit from this class. We are all impacted somehow, to varying and often subtle degrees.
Thursday, November 10, 10 a.m.-12 noon

Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping) Workshop Saturday, November 12, 1 - 3 p.m., Fireside Room $45, sliding scale available
Join Neurolinguistic Programming and EFT Practitioner, Laurie Williams and Elizabeth Fulmer in this afternoon workshop where you will have the opportunity to learn, explore and experience the empowering (and easy to use!) tool of EFT (tapping). EFT is offered using gentle tapping on the endpoints of the body’s meridians to calm the nervous system and relieve pain, anxiety and stress-related conditions.
In this workshop, we will be tapping to release limiting beliefs! Come be supported in a small group that shares similar concerns and experience relief together!
DCC's Compassion, Peace and Justice Ministry (CPJ) contributed toward the cost of this event, an important discussion about racial segregation and repairing the damage done.
Join us on November 17 at Congregation Bet Haverim.
