Notes from the Doors
Holly and Kathy from Indivisible Bainbridge Island and Carollynn Zimmers from North Kitsap Indivisible, Marty Bishop and Dianna Eversole from LD 26 have been door-knocking in Bremerton for months, talking with voters. Some conversation really stand out:
  • Rebbecca, who said she'd only voted for Democrats in the past and would never vote for a Republican, was adamant that she would not vote this year. Why? Because Trump isn't in jail yet and her life is crappy living on SSI and in HUD housing where nothing gets fixed. Holly told Rebbecca about Emily Randall's commission to study how to get health care for all Washingtonians. Dianna was persistent and kept the conversation going. Fifteen minutes later, she got Rebbecca to say maybe she would vote.
  • We wanted to talk with his wife, but her husband, William, said neither he nor his wife would vote Democratic anymore (if ever?). Why? The Republicans have the red states where they control everything, and blue states, like Washington, where Democrats control everything and still nothing gets done.
  • We met Richard living in his rusty single-wide on a hill overlooking the car dealerships in West Hills Auto Plex. His wife had recently died, so all he had for company was his pug. It was hard to see how he was getting food for himself and his pug. He said he would vote Democratic. Kathy spent some time trying to find any kind of social services from the city of Bremerton or the county that might be of help and that might not be too obtrusive.
  • We met a 30-year-old woman struggling with mental health issues. She and her 11 year-old autistic son and two large dogs were about to be evicted because her rental house had been sold and was going to be torn down and rebuilt. We researched housing resources for her.
  • We met a woman who had recently retired from the Navy. Her ship had departed the US just before COVID and returned just in time for Jan. 6. She seemed sharp and open to Democratic values. Then she said of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists "I think they've learned their lesson."
Wrong. They haven't learned their lesson. For some reason, having a party leader who attempted a coup hasn't taught them anything at all or maybe just to try harder next time. The many Republicans we've talked with are smug and unrepentant. "I'M A REPUBLICAN!, I'M A REPUBLICAN!" shouted a white-haired guy before he slammed the door. It is folly for Democrats to imagine there are many Republicans who have changed their minds about Donald Trump.
