The Lebanese Film Festival is presenting a busy November of Lebanese film across Australia, with Canberra and Newcastle events coming up, and the ongoing release of Al Hayba across Australia.

Maia, a single mother, lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter, Alex. On Christmas Eve, they receive an unexpected delivery: notebooks, tapes, and photos Maia sent to her best friend from 1980’s Beirut. Maia refuses to open the box or confront its memories, but Alex secretly begins diving into it. Between fantasy and reality, Alex enters the world of her mother’s tumultuous, passionate adolescence during the Lebanese civil war, unlocking mysteries of a hidden past.

Beirut Hold’em is a slow burn depiction of four middle-class men, fighting their way in a country on the edge of war and bankruptcy. Instability is the norm, everyday is a high wire act and existence is a roll of the dice.

AL HAYBA THE MOVIE, NATIONAL RELEASE
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle, Canberra
The Lebanese Film Festival has released Al Hayba nationally in cinemas across Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Newcastle and Brisbane. Based on the popular Al Hayba series, the movie is a drama of hostages, murder and tit for tats. The murderer of Jabal’s father, is spotted alive in Bulgaria. Jabal heads a fierce hunt passing by Bulgaria and Istanbul, with the aim to bring Nazem back to justice to Al Hayba. The film stars Taim Hasan, Mona Wassef, Said Serhan, Rafic Ali Ahmad, Mohammad Akil.

WHERE CAN I WATCH LEBANESE FILMS AFTER THE FESTIVAL?

THE COMBINATION on Netflix, written by Australian-Lebanese film maker, George Basha. Set in the Western suburbs of Sydney, Lebanese-Australian John is released from goal to find his younger brother Charlie caught in the very same world of crime that put him behind bars.
UNDER THE BOMBS, Netflix. Directed by Philippe Aractingi. In the wake of Israel's 2006 bombardment of Lebanon, a determined woman finds her way into the country convincing a taxi cab driver to take a risky journey around the scarred region in search of her sister and her son.
WHERE DO WE GO NOW, on Google Play or Youtube. Directed by Nadine Labaki and previously screened at the Lebanese Film Festival. A group of Lebanese women try to ease religious tensions between Christians and Muslims in their village.

LEBANESE CULTURE AND ARTS
Nadi Sha, a local Australian-Lebanese film maker has released his first feature film, Everything in Between, showing in cinemas this weekend and next week.
An alienated teenager learns to find meaning and purpose through the pain of love and loss in this Australian drama. For details, head here. See David Stratton's review below.
