ELECTION DAY!
Sign up now for a post-Midterms Discussion via Zoom tomorrow night!
What surprises will there be? How will results affect our cities? Our states? Our country?

Reece met with students earlier this year to talk about the midterms.
The Midterm Election is underway, so soon the political ads, poll predictions, and heated "what-if" discussions will come to a stop. We will all most likely be surprised by some outcomes and confused by others. Join Civitas for a virtual post-election discussion tomorrow, Wednesday, November 9th at 7:00 pm via Zoom. We will have two former Civitas interns, Reece Ellis and Claire Shackleford, highlight results in Missouri and beyond. This will be an excellent chance to better understand what the wins and losses might mean for all of us. Your questions will be the focus of the conversation. We promise to end the discussion at 8:00 pm.
Click here now to signup and be a part of this important dialogue!
If you have already signed up and have a new question that you want to ask Claire and Reece, please email it to us at info@civitas-stl.com. You can also ask questions on the actual Zoom.

Claire (shown right) was a Civitas all star and helped with street polling in high school.
Preserving Democracy Comes First
By the time that you are reading this newsletter, voting will have begun in much of the country. We don’t know what the results will bring us, but many observers say that there is a force more important to the country than the outcomes of individual races.

Democracy requires civility. When voters are intimidated, or skeptical about the honesty and integrity of our electoral system, then civic engagement decreases. Regrettably, fear causes many of the most thoughtful of our citizens to retreat from active participation in our democracy.

So, our hope at Civitas is that however the individual races come out in this midterm election, we must all recommit ourselves to preserving and strengthening the democracy that has been so central to our way of life. This means that we must protect freedom of speech and a commitment to promoting the common good for all of us.

If you would like to further discuss this, join us Wednesday night with our post-election analysis as well as numerous other future programs Civitas will continue to sponsor on democracy. We’re not going to solve all the problems, but we’d rather be part of the solution than passive observers of the weakening of our democracy.
Count Down is on for the first HS Model UN Sessions!
Are you ready?
The delegate from Bangladesh addressing a resolution at the Model UN last spring.
(Masks will be optional for upcoming MUN dates.)
We know delegates are busy researching their countries and preparing for their upcoming Model UN sessions. Important additional steps to remember:
  • Every delegate, even if sharing a country, must sign up for Model UN participation:
Click here to reach the Model UN signup form.
  • Begin researching global problems and drafting resolutions. There are a lot of helpful resources on the Civitas website for writing resolutions.
  • Let Civitas know if you'd like us to visit your club or group to talk about resolution writing.
  • Submit final resolutions via email by noon the Wednesday before your Model UN session, which is ONE WEEK FROM TOMORROW FOR SESSIONS A & B. Email them to Stephanie: gavinstephanie@gmail.com.
  • Let Civitas know if your school takes new countries or no longer needs any that you drafted.
