VINCENT IS ANNOUNCED AS THE OVERALL WINNER IN THE PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY AT THE PLATAFRICA JEWELLERY DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING COMPETITION

Jewellery Design lecturer Samantha Vincent is flying the Durban University of Technology (DUT) flag high after recently being named as one of the winners at the 23rd annual esteemed PlatAfrica jewellery design and manufacturing competition. The announcement was made during a gala awards ceremony held at The Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.

The event is hosted annually by Anglo American Platinum, Metal Concentrators and Platinum Guild International (PGI) India.

Designers were tasked with creating state-of-the-art pieces that embrace sustainability while speaking to new perspectives, interconnectedness, and transitions brought about by their COVID-19 experiences.

ALUMNUS GUGWANA IS THE WINNER OF THE 2022 ENGEN PITCH & POLISH COMPETITION

The charismatic Durban University of Technology (DUT) alumnus winner, Luvo Gugwana was declared the winner of the prestigious 2022 Engen Pitch & Polish Competition, cosponsored by Nedbank and powered by Raizcorp.

The Pitch & Polish is a lateral-thinking business competition and workshop programme, exposing would-be entrepreneurs to enterprise development training and thinking, helping you turn their business idea into a business success.

Gugwana, (27) from Tabankulu in the Eastern Cape was extremely excited and over the moon with his win of R650 000 in cash which will be paid out over two years as he achieves the business milestones he laid out in his pitch, as well as a bursary worth R350 000 for a full two-year Raizcorp incubation programme.

SARMS AND DUT BLAZER SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED AT THE DUT INNOVATION INDABA GALA DINNER

The Durban University of Technology (DUT), in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), eThekwini Municipality and the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), hosted the exhilarating 2022 DUT Innovation Indaba at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) from Monday, 24 October 2022 to Thursday, 27 October 2022.

The theme of the 2022 DUT Innovation Indaba was: Taking academic innovation from idea to marketplace and its main objective was to strengthen the research and commercialisation practices for greater socio-economic impact.

DUT COMMUNITY ENCOURAGED TO SAVE SOIL

To encourage the Durban University of Technology (DUT) community to save soil, DUT officially launched the Save Soil Movement at the Horticulture Gardens, Ritson campus on Friday, 28 October 2022.

The theme of the event was: It all starts with a simple initiative to save soil. How can universities (staff and students) contribute to this cause? The first 60 people to arrive at the event received the Save Soil T-shirts and were encouraged to join the movement. A tree was planted to commemorate the commencement of the Save Soil movement at DUT. Guests were given seedlings to take home to encourage them to save soil and save our planet.

THAVER SCOOPS FIVE AWARDS AT THE DUT FOOD AND NUTRITION AWARDS 2022

A second-year Consumer Sciences in Food and Nutrition student, Riashnee Thaver scooped five awards at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Food and Nutrition Awards hosted by the Department of Consumer Science: Food and Nutrition at the Rendezvous Restaurant, Steve Biko campus on Thursday, 27 October 2022.

Thaver (23) from the Bluff, Durban was awarded the Best Academic FSCP 1 Student for 2021, the Best Academic Nutrition 1 Student, Best First Year Academic Student 2021, Outstanding Performance in Coil Project 2022 and Cupcakes for Cancer Coordination.

Speaking at the event about her achievement, Thaver said she was overwhelmed as she did not expect the recognition at this level.

DUT LIBRARY COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL OPEN ACCESS WEEK

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Library commemorated the International Open Access Week with colourful and creative displays, a public lecture, and the publishing and launch of an open-access book by HELTASA via the DUT Open Monograph Press platform.

Open Access (OA) week was celebrated in South Africa and globally from 24 to 30 October 2022. The International OA community celebrates this momentous week to encourage libraries, researchers, and institutions to deliberate and tackle critical issues about open access. The DUT public lecture, hosted by the library, was held virtually via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday, 26 October 2022 with Mr Romeo Matumba, Librarian: Marketing and Communication directing this exciting and intellectually stimulating event.
