On Election Day, Remember
“The Vote Is Precious”

“Let us vote in such overwhelming numbers that we show everyone how much we love our country, how much we love our people, how much we love peace, how much we love life itself.” – Nelson Mandela

Election Day across the United States is Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Throughout its nearly 100-year history, American Baptist College has been a training ground for those who championed social justice and civil rights, including the right to vote.

ABC alumnus and former Rep. John Lewis once said: “The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democratic society and we’ve got to use it.” Recent students and graduates have continued to champion the cause of voting rights, with support of such initiatives as the Black Voters Matter campaign.

Your vote is your right. While November 8 is Election Day, early voting in some jurisdictions extends all the way through Monday, November 7. To check for voting locations and schedules in your area, visit www.vote.org.

Join Our Chapel Service … From Anywhere!

ABC’s weekly chapel service can now be seen live every Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Central time on YouTube and Zoom.

In addition to making chapel attendance more accessible for students, Dr. William Green, Dean of Chapel, notes that, “Adding this feature to the chapel experience allows us to have guests appear from different locations around the country to be presenters in the Fine Arts Room and online in synchronization. Also, those unable to attend in person can still be there.”

Questions About Financial Aid? Tune in Thursday, November 10

Students and families routinely seek information about their financial aid options, and the recent decisions regarding student loan forgiveness have introduced more questions. If you’re not able to view the live discussion, the session will be recorded and shared on ABC’s various social media platforms.

“Coming Back from COVID-19” with Healthy Eating Habits

Many holiday gatherings and memories center around food. Students, faculty, and staff who participated in ABC’s most recent “Coming Back from COVID-19” Lunch & Learn session on October 24 learned that making healthier nutrition choices can be a part of the celebration.

Jerry Davis, coordinator of ABC’s wellness program, shared a variety of strategies with attendees. He encouraged everyone to start their healthy eating habits now, but also to not be too hard on themselves. “For me, October is the new January. If I start now and fail … and fail … and fail, guess what? I have until January to get it right and start again. If you fall off, fall back on!”

Start Your Healthy Eating Resolution Now!” The “Coming Back from COVID-19” Lunch & Learn series is paid for with funding provided by the U.S. Government to address and/or mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic pursuant to the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) Act.

ABC alumnus Robert Hall (2015), who serves as interim pastor of Howard Congregational Church in Nashville, has been named Chaplain at Meharry Medical College. He succeeds Minister Robin Kimbrough Hayes, who was elected Davidson County General Sessions Judge – Division V, earlier this year.
