NEW FACES

Welcome to the following people joining our community this year:

Baatra Erdene-Ochir has joined the Humanities Collaboratory as a postdoctoral fellow for the 2022-23 academic year. He was born in Mongolia and studied at a Buddhist philosophy school at Ganden Tegchenling Monastery, the Center of Mongolian Buddhism, where he was trained in formal Buddhist monastic education for more than a decade. He holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2010); an MA in Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School (2013); and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from UCSB (2021). Prior to coming to Michigan, Baatra held an 84000 Postdoctoral Fellowship at UCSB for translating Buddhist scriptures. During his current fellowship, his research focuses on religious traditions in Mongolia proper during the Mongol Empire and the Yuan dynasty.

IN THE CLASSROOM

Read on to learn about special events in ALC classes and Programs:

The JLP recently held a workshop titled “Tidbits from 25 Years In and Out of Japan,” which was also co-sponsored by the LSA Opportunity Hub and Japan Student Association. The guest speaker was Mr. David Ostreicher, Manager at Toyota’s North American R&D headquarters and an alum of the University of Michigan. Participants learned about stereotyping, business cultures, information sharing processes, and so on.

Benshi (Silent Film Narrator) Yamauchi Nanako narrated the silent film A Page of Madness (1926) at the Michigan Theater on October 13. In addition to her performance there, she visited a class of ASIANLAN 425 Media Japanese. The students interviewed her in Japanese to learn what she does as a benshi, the history of benshi, and benshi’s roles in the modern film society in Japan. At the end, students provided narration to a clip of Chaplin’s silent film in Japanese with Yamauchi’s guidance, which was very amusing.
