Join us virtually on Wednesday, November 23 at 7pm for our 2022 Herzberg Lecture presented by Dr. Sally Otto, Killam University Professor at the University of British Columbia. Human activities are reshaping the selective pressures faced by organisms and altering which species survive and which go extinct. Science Café | The Anthropocene: Inside the Quest for the Human Epoch at Crawford Lake, Ontario - Wednesday, Nov. 16
Join us for our next virtual Science Café with Earth Science Department chair, Tim Patterson on Wednesday, November 16 at 2pm. Dr. Patterson will discuss his research on the diverse proxies of industrialization, nuclear weapons testing, and other environmental change that have been documented within Crawford Lake located in Milton, ON. Dr. Patterson and his team in collaboration with Brock University are now working toward establishing the lake as the “Golden Spike” for the proposed Anthropocene Epoch. The Anthropocene Working Group will reveal its choice of the Anthropocene GSSP on December 8.

Newborn Screening Ontario - Building for the Future with Carleton - Friday, Nov. 18
The Department of Health Sciences will host a talk with Newborn Screening Ontario on Friday, November 18 at 1:30pm in Room 3020 of the Nicol Building. The talk will feature Dr. Pranesh Chakraborty, Dr. Jennifer Milburn, Dr. Alicia DiBattista, and Monica Lamoreux. Newborn Screening Ontario (NSO) is the provincial program that coordinates newborn screening in Ontario, Canada. This event is free to attend.

Health Sciences Seminar Series | Movement as Medicine for Children with Chronic Medical Conditions - Thursday, Nov. 24
The Department of Health Sciences continues its virtual Health Seminar Series on Thursday, November 24 at 12pm. This presentation will focus on current research that aims to promote movement as medicine in children and adolescents with chronic medical conditions and will highlight the key role of patient stories in shaping ongoing studies in the Child Health & Exercise Medicine Program.

Top Canadian Science and Engineering Prizes for Carleton Researchers
Congratulations to Dr. Lenore Fahrig on being awarded the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering and Dr. Sonia Chiasson on being awarded the Arthur B. McDonald Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) at the annual NSERC Celebrating Excellence Event on October 26.
Also this month, Dr. Fahrig and Dr. Chiasson were honoured with their awards at Carleton in a ceremony featuring Carleton President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Carleton Vice-President of Research and International Rafik Goubran, and Dean of Science Maria DeRosa. Department of Physics professor Dr. Manuella Vincter Reappointed ATLAS Deputy Spokesperson
Congratulations to Department of Physics professor Dr. Manuella Vincter on her reappointment to another term as deputy spokesperson for ATLAS at CERN, the European organization for nuclear research. Vincter’s mandate will be extended until February 2025, where she will continue to serve as a deputy spokesperson.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics honoured the memory of Carleton instructor Luc Bourbonnais by unveiling a memorial plaque in the outdoor area next to the Herzberg building. The ceremony was attended by his family, friends, and Carleton colleagues who all said a few words about Luc's legacy.

Carleton University is following the advice of Ottawa Public Health, the Ontario Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario, and the Public Health Agency of Canada for the latest information about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and recommendations for prevention. Carleton’s Coronavirus website contains a summary of facts from these health agencies as well as answers to questions Carleton faculty, staff, students, and the community may have.
