In addition to our advocacy efforts, we seek to keep our fellow Islanders informed on all transportation infrastructure activities on our Island.  We hope you find this monthly update of consolidated State, County, and City information useful.

Recent Activities

Northern Pitchfork:  Charleston County awarded a $4.3M contract for the Northern Pitchfork.  The Pitchfork will run from Maybank Highway at Fenwick Hall Allee to upper River Road.  There will be traffic signal at the Maybank/Fenwick Hall Allee intersection.  Construction is expected to start in early 2023 and take about two years to complete.

Upper River Road:  Design work continues for the new elementary school on upper River Road.  The Charleston County School District plans to add a roundabout at the entrance to the school on River Road and to add turn lanes at the River Road and Brownswood Road intersection.

Upcoming Activities

Main Road and Mary Ann Point Road Intersection:  Charleston County conducted a Road Safety Audit to identify safety improvements at this intersection.  A draft report with recommendations is expected by the end of this year.

Mark Clark Extension:  SCDOT has hired an outside firm to reevaluate the $2.35B cost estimate for the project.  Results are expected by the end of this year.  The County is then expected to determine funding sources by the Spring of 2023.  If the funding can be found, then construction is hoped to begin in 2028 and is expected to take about four years to complete.

Main Road Corridor Segment A (aka the Main and 17 flyover):  The bids for the design-build contract are being evaluated by Charleston County with an award anticipated in the Spring of 2023.  It is expected it will then take about three years to complete the project.

Main Road Corridor Segment C (aka Bohicket Road):  Charleston County is scheduling meetings with permitting agencies and will apply additional NEPA screening criteria analysis to minimize the number of alternativesThey will get back with the public in late Spring of 2023 with the alternative(s).  They hope to start construction in 2025/2026 and may take up to three years to complete, based upon which alternative is selected.

Consolidated Transportation Project Schedule

There is some uncertainty in this schedule, especially for projects that are further out in time.  For example:

  • The duration of Segment C of the Main Road Corridor Project will vary based upon which alternative is chosen.
  • The start of the Mark Clark Extension is dependent upon funding.
