Have your Say on Haynes Street
Concept designs for the proposed redevelopment of Haynes Street are now ready for community feedback.
What is the Haynes Strret upgrade Project? It is one of the major projects contributing to the revitalisation of the Kalamunda Town Centre as part of the Kalamunda Activity Centre Plan. The Activity Centre Plan is the guiding document underpinning the revitalisation of the Kalamunda Town Centre, shaping its future positioning as a contemporary, attractive and functional centre for residents and visitors alike.
The vision of the Kalamunda Activity Centre Plan is for Haynes Street to become a clearly identifiable ‘high street’ enhancing an already functioning urban fabric and increasing pedestrian focus and connectivity.
This will be achieved through:
- Re-establishing Haynes Street as a clearly identifiable ‘high street’ connecting to the greater Kalamunda Town Centre.
- Increasing pedestrian safety and connectivity, including safer parking for cyclists and people with a disability.
- Providing a pleasant environment for residents and visitors to enjoy, with shade, rest stops, weather protection and wider footpaths.
- Enhancing and strengthening local business opportunities.

City wins awards for community engagement
The City of Kalamunda was recognised at two separate awards ceremonies last week, winning the Local Government Professionals (LG Pro) Connecting Community Award for community engagement at the Annual Local Government Professionals WA State Conference Awards, as well as taking out the Western Australian Bicycle Network (WABN) Metropolitan Category in the Your Move Awards hosted by the Department of Transport.
The LG Pro Connecting Community Award was received for the City's work on the Gladys Newton Playground redevelopment, including the work to attract additional funding, collaboration with the community and all stakeholders in the design of the site, and its success as an intergenerational playground.
The upgrades to Gladys Newton Park had a strong focus on social inclusion and accessibility - bringing the community together. The park officially opened on 30 May 2022. Park upgrades were jointly funded by the City of Kalamunda, State Government and Hall and Prior, the operator of Karingal Green Integrated aged care facility. The objective of the park upgrade was to create a blended open space for young and old to share.
The Department of Transport's Your Move Awards celebrate active transport champions. Winners were announced on Wednesday 2 November. The City won for its work on the High Wycombe Shared Path project.
The High Wycombe Local Route (Route) is a series of shared paths and on-road cycling facilities that increase road safety, connect the local neighbourhood and provide a much-needed transport link for High Wycombe residents to the new High Wycombe Train Station. It is changing lives, improving health and wellbeing, helping to teach Aboriginal History and Aboriginal Stories as we walk together on our journey of reconciliation, engaging with community to create our places in the City of Kalamunda.
The Route runs from Kiandra Way, High Wycombe, passing directly through John Maclarty Park, connecting with the new High Wycombe Station. It creates a true sense of place and purpose, connecting residents to nearby recreational and sporting precincts (Scott Reserve and Fleming Reserve), and three local primary schools.
Following collaborative workshops and community engagement, visualising what it means to the residents to live and move through their local places and spaces in High Wycombe, the Route came to life, interpreting neighbourhood stories with artwork by local Whadjuk Noongar Aboriginal artist, Aurora Abraham. The strong, brightly coloured designs provide the additional benefit of increasing community safety by creating a visual awareness of the intersection between road and shared path.

Fran West: Village Champion and Local Hero
Tireless. Giving. Dedicated. Donovan Village President Fran West is the latest winner of a City of Kalamunda Local Hero Award. As president of the village, Fran dedicates much of her time to her fellow residents, supporting a whole host of events at the village and hostel, offering a helping hand to anyone who needs it, and improving the lives of those around her.
Nominator and fellow resident, Coral Culling gave a long list of reasons that Fran deserved recognition, including raising money through the Containers For Change program to help keep activities in the village sustainable.
Mayor Margaret Thomas said the community was richer thanks to people like Fran.
“We need giving, thoughtful people in our community at every stage of life, and Fran is the perfect candidate for a Senior Community Member Local Hero Award”, she said.
The City’s Local Hero Awards are a celebration of the people within our neighborhoods who are passionate about making a difference, freely volunteering to give back to the community. Award winners receive a $50 KalaCash gift card.
The monthly Awards are proudly presented by the City of Kalamunda and supported by Echo News.
If you know a local hero, nominate them today at engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/local-heroes

Restricted burning period - book a skip
Residents are reminded that as of 1 October 2022 the City of Kalamunda has moved into a Restricted Burning period until midnight on Wednesday 30 November.
Reducing fuel increases the chances of your property surviving a bushfire. The more fuel available to a bushfire, the hotter the fire can burn and the harder it is to control. Flammable material such as leaf litter, fallen branches, dead grasses and dead shrubs provide fuel for fire, allowing it to grow more quickly and burn at higher temperatures.
Reduced fuel levels assist not only in reducing how quickly a fire can spread, but it also reduces its spotting distance (how far the fire can jump).
Did you know that the City provides skip bins to residents for the collection of green waste and general household
waste? It's easy to book your skip - visit the City's website, search for waste services and follow the instructions.

Reminder: the Australian Fire Danger Rating System has changed!
On 1 September 2022, new fire danger ratings came into effect across Australia.
The move from six to four ratings, new names and thresholds, changes how Fire Danger Ratings are referenced.
The new Australian Fire Danger Ratings (AFDRS) levels are:
- Moderate: Plan and prepare
- High: Be ready to act
- Extreme: Take action now to protect life and property
- Catastrophic: For your survival, leave bushfire risk areas
As we head it into summer, it is important to know the potential level of danger should a bushfire start.
Have you checked your plan against the new fire danger ratings?
Find out more about fire danger ratings and upcoming changes, review your bushfire plan or make a new one via the DFES website.
