Dear <<First Name>>,

Each year, on the first Sunday of November, we celebrate those members who have gone to be with the Lord in the previous year. We call it "All Saints' Sunday."

As we remember those who have gone before us, may we experience the magnitude of love God has shown us in Jesus Christ. As we remember those who have led us to the Lord, let us count our blessings, share the gift of faith with someone in need and do something to make a difference in our world. Let us be the hands and feet of Christ for those struggling under the weight of life.

On this All Saints' Sunday, I will be preaching from the words of the writer of Hebrews, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us." (Hebrews 12:1)

Our human nature is often so self-concerned; we do not realize the sacrifices that have been made for us. So much has been given to us. We are so richly blessed. Yet, when we fail (and we will at some time or another), we are tempted to quit and throw in the towel. The author of Hebrews says, in essence, remember what has been done for you. Don't give up. Keep the faith. Stay the course. Claim God's gift of love and forgiveness in Christ. Live the faith.

In the coming week, each of us will be given the chance to commit to sharing our gifts to the continuing work of our church—prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. May we all join in the words of the great hymn,

"Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart."

As we look to next week, let us remember that we have a great debt that has been paid through faith in Christ. Many have gone before us. Let's pick up the pieces of our lives, turn our faces to God, and know that we are indeed surrounded by a cloud of divine messengers cheering us through whatever life may bring.

See you Sunday,

Pastor John Allen

P.S. If you're particularly dreading this holiday season due to the passing of a loved one or other difficult life event, I encourage you to come to a one-off event called 'Surviving the Holidays' on November 16. Learn more here.
