Is anyone planning to compete?

News and

Sometimes I wonder what goes through pilots' minds?
Does anyone bother checking that the TTIS is less than the TIS for expiry of the maintenance release?

Time  for a refresher on the subject for some who fly UPG - read up on the subject here https://www.casa.gov.au/maintenance-release
"Part 3 of the maintenance release has a dual purpose. This section is used: − to certify for the daily inspection − for recording the daily total flying time for each day’s flying and the total time in service of the aircraft at the completion of the day’s flying. − for recording oil uplifts − for tracking events as required such as:
  • landings
  • pressurisation cycles
  • engine start cycles
  • aerobatic factored hours
  • aerial application factored hours"
Of those, only the time actually spend doing aerobatics is to be recorded.
In addition, any oil added must be recorded. Remember to add oil just when it is below 6 and don't add much as it will be  tossed out doing aerobatics.

"The total daily flight time must be entered in the 'Flight Time' column and the total time in service must be calculated and entered in the 'Progressive Total' column, after the last flight of the day and before the aircraft is next flown." The flight switch indicates the TTIS!

Do not write the daily total in the MR unless you are absolutely sure that it is the last flight of the day! "after the last flight of the day and before the aircraft is next flown" means what it says - leave it for the person who will next fly the aeroplane, whenever that may be.

Rumours

UPG is looking good after its recent makeover!
From all angles.

Applications will soon open for the 2023 Pilkington graduate Aerobatic Scholarship. An applicant must have a minimum of an RPL and an aerobatic endorsement. Those with more aerobatic experience including aerobatic instructors are welcome to apply.

The selection criterion is simply consideration of a short written essay with respect to the goal of providing an overall benefit to the sport of aerobatics (within a reasonable timeframe). The recipient receives books, theory instruction and flight training (4 hrs in a Super Decathlon or 5 hrs in a Cessna Aerobat) towards a 1500 ft aerobatic endorsement.

Rumour of another Pitts S-2A changing hands and moved to Victoria.

Aerobatic Contests

The schedule for the remaining contests in 2022 and for next year is available online at

Happy Flying

I'm available as usual for training in tailwheel, spinning and aerobatics, especially competition aerobatics in the Super Decathlon at Moorabbin. Other instructors are available too: Adam Thomson and David Prossor

Looking forward to seeing you at the airport or an aerobatic contest soon - keep in touch - email David.
