Greetings TARTans,
On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon TART Trails staff got to spend time celebrating with the Leelanau Trail Crew. This all volunteer, hard working group of guys puts incredible time, talent and sweat equity into making sure the trail provides safe and scenic experiences for tens of thousands of people to enjoy each. This incredible crew doesn't do it for the glory or the recognition but out of love of where they live and the seemingly innate inclination they have to give back. And while I believe this crew is made up of extraordinary humans, what I also know to be true is we live in a region that has a powerful sense of community purpose and is filled with people who look for ways to give back to support each other and the places we live and love. It got me thinking. Before we head into the holidays and get swept up in the hustle and bustle of the season, it's good to take a minute to pause, celebrate and give thanks. So in the spirit of the season ahead, thank you. To this incredible LT Crew and all our TART volunteers. And thank you for the part you play to make our (or your) corner of the world just a little bit better.

Go Go Garfield Township
Garfield Township is planning for improvements to the Grand Traverse Commons Natural Area. The Township hopes to create a design that builds upon their Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the Grand Traverse Commons Master Plan, but also recognizes the Natural Area’s relationship to surrounding properties and neighborhoods. Following Monday’s unveiling of the new design plan, Garfield Township will accept public comment on the plan through November 21. Comments can be emailed to parks@garfield-twp.com. The plan will be presented to Parks and Recreation Commissioners December 5.

SPECIAL THANKS

The 2022 Zombie Run was another smashing, scary success! 🎃Thank you to the participants, organizers, and volunteers who pulled off this annual Halloween tradition. Special thanks to Matt and Jennifer Ross, the devilshly clever masterminds behind the whole operation and who give back so generously to the community year after year.

Be sure to check out all the ghoulishly good photos here.

They came, they stuffed, signed and sealed. Many many thanks to volunteers Geri Morris and Deena Barshney for answering the call to help us prepare our year end appeal letters.

TART Trails staff had a great time catching up with our beloved Leelanau Trail Crew earlier this week. While their season typically winds down once the snow flies, they've maintained some serious and steady work this fall season. All those downed trees that you see, or maybe you don't see because they've been cleared and cleaned so quickly, is largely thanks to this hardworking and dedicated crew. Fun fact: these guys have a combined lifetime 18,795 hours spent volunteering, with a total of 67 years between them. Thank you for all you do to help keep our community happy, healthy and active!

THANK YOU TIMBER RIDGE!

“While there are numerous non profits who work through blood, sweat and tears to better this planet, we at Timber Ridge have found few as special as TART. Their impact isn’t just visible in the beautiful landscapes that they help transform but also in the faces of the community that benefit from all their hard work. With a staff of some of the greatest humans you will ever meet, they put all that they can into building something far bigger than themselves. We are beyond proud to be a supporter of an organization that understands the importance of living in the present moment while balancing the need for building a better future.”

TART TRIVIA

Did you know that hunters are required to wear blaze orange so they are visible to other hunters?
Take their hue...If you plan on being out in the woods later this month, be sure to suit up in your most fashionable and functional orange. Or better yet, maybe just check out some trails near town, put that dusty gym pass to use, or try out that new activity you've been meaning to take on. Fitness court, anyone?

Reminder that the Vasa Pathway is MDNR owned land upon which hunting is permitted. If you're heading out, please exercise caution on the trails: wear orange, stick to marked trails, keep your pup on the leash and avoid early morning/dusk hours. Let's practice mutual respect for all outdoor enthusiasts enjoying their sport.
