We hope you are enjoying the turn to Autumn with warm layers, seasonal soups, and all the pumpkin spice your senses can handle. While Fall can often be a time for fun and transition, the seasonal effects and potential for busy schedules can also be a good prompt to reflect on our own mental health and wellbeing and how we can offer support to others. For those of you working in professional settings with perinatal families, we hope you will consider these opportunities and resources to grow your knowledge and skills in addressing perinatal behavioral health:

  • The PSI-KS and KCC team are very excited to close out our 2022 learning series on November 7th with a presentation by Rachel Hess focused on support for LGBQ/T families in the perinatal period. Register today.

  • Prescribers and other advanced practice providers are encouraged to register and join our 2022-2023 Kansas Moms in Mind Case Consultation Clinic Series to build their capacity in the treatment and management of perinatal mental health and substance use disorders.

  • We love this chart, taken from MCPAP for Moms, which lists different evidence-based prevention strategies and treatment modalities when discussing maternal mental health.

  • Our friends at HaysMed are hosting a Women’s Health Symposium on November 4th to discuss a variety of topics aimed at improving women’s and maternal health outcomes.

Finally, and on a somber note, we want to acknowledge and hold space for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month which takes place in October. One in four women will experience a loss during pregnancy, delivery or infancy. While not uncommon, each loss and an individual's experience with grief is unique and should be honored as such. This message was reinforced for me watching a recent NICHQ webinar on The Social Determinants of Grief: the Impact of Black Infant Loss. Other resources addressing pregnancy and infant loss: Star Legacy Foundation, Kansas Infant Death and SIDS Network, and Postpartum Support International.

Take care,
