Secretary of Energy Granholm and Congresswoman Porter Tour an All-Electric Home

Last month the Building Decarbonization Coalition welcomed Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Congresswoman Katie Porter (CA-45th) to the all-electric home of Steve Allison, a Switch Is On ambassador, to learn first-hand about the technologies core to decarbonization like induction cooking and heat pumps. "There’s an assumption that if you’re going with a decarbonization option, it’s more expensive. That may not be true. And when you layer on rebates and credits, it really makes sense.” explained Secretary Granholm after her and Congresswoman Porter shared their excitement about preparing a meal using the “magic” of induction cooking.

120V Induction ranges & cooktops are on the way! 

A new generation of induction products are on their way and ready to shake things up. Induction currently requires the installation of a dedicated 240v circuit in order to function. However, a new generation of induction products in development have the ability to plug into traditional 120v plugs already found in homes.

Don’t let the bright colors of the prototype (pictured) from startup Channing Street Copper Company fool you, these products are powerful and equipped with integrated lithium-ion batteries that provide the ability to cook and power an external 120v appliance (like a refrigerator) even during power outages. Products like this represent a gap in the market for induction that makes electrifying kitchens more financially accessible and energy resilient.

CA gas stoves found to leak cancerous chemicals

Following similar findings in Boston’s gas supply, a new study reports that gas being piped to California homes contains hazardous chemicals such as benzene which has been linked to leukemia and other cancers. This alarming research comes after previous findings showed that some gas stoves leak these chemicals into homes even when they’re not in use.

Governments lead the charge towards all-electric kitchens

The movement towards all-electric kitchens is being powered by consumer excitement and government action that is widening the market opportunity for technologies like induction cooking.

To date, 83 local governments and 12 states (and DC) across the country have passed policies requiring or encouraging all-electric buildings with dozens more working on policies of their own. These policies are rapidly growing the market for electric appliances by increasing consumer purchasing and adoption.

Consumer Reports: Gas stoves pollute indoor air above public health standards.

Harmful gasses that come from power plants and vehicles can also be found coming from gas ranges inside your home when cooking. Consumer Reports conducted 24 controlled tests to measure levels of NOx, carbon monoxide, and other gasses found near gas ranges when in use. In a few tests, levels of nitrogen dioxide exceeding health standards were found, confirming the potential health risks these gas appliances pose not only to those cooking, but those in proximity as well.

So you want to switch to an induction stovetop. What you should know in advance. 

It’s a no-brainer that induction cooktops are safer than gas, but there’s other factors to consider and many myths to get to the bottom before making the switch. For starters, you may already have pots and pans that are compatible with induction. Simply take a magnet off your fridge and place it at the bottom of your pans. If it sticks, it’s compatible!

CBS National News reports on gas stove pollution and climate contribution.   

“I need to cook for my family, but I don’t want to do it to the detriment of their future.” Researchers from Stanford University measured pollution from a Denver family’s gas stove. They found that in just about 6 minutes, nitrogen dioxide levels reached a limit higher than what the EPA considers safe. These findings, coupled with the cost of methane gas currently at a 14 year high, means there’s no better time to take advantage of incoming IRA rebates and tax credits to electrify.

BDC partners with Ferguson for industry trainings

This month, BDC kicked off a partnership with Ferguson, a national home appliance retailer. We began with induction cooking events in their beautiful San Francisco and Santa Monica showrooms. The events educated their sales staff and building industry networks on home + kitchen electrification and rebates/resources to help them practice electrification with their clients.

Induction Cooking in Commercial Kitchens - The Future of Dining

BDC's Noah Cordoba and Chef Rachelle Boucher recently joined Electrify Now and Chef Chris Galarza for Electrify Week to explore why induction cooking and all-electric commercial kitchens deliver superior cooking performance, how this avoids the health and safety risks to staff associated with burning fossil fuels in restaurants, and why this technology is poised to take over in commercial kitchens.
