Latest UK data from 2019-2020 shows a significant increase in preventable cancer cases. The data shows that breast, followed by lung cancer, remain the most common cancers in the UK. It also shows that overall, there were more cancer cases in men than in women.

We recommend following our cancer prevention recommendations to lead a healthier, cancer free life. Some of our recommendations include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Limiting your consumption of red and processed meat
  • Move more and keep active

Breast cancer: a reality for 1 in 8 women

October is breast cancer awareness month and with breast cancer now the most common cancer in the UK, it's more important than ever to be aware of. 1 in 8 women facing a diagnosis in their lifetime. Despite what many of us may think, only 3% of breast cancer cases are in women who carry genes that have been linked to the disease, with some cases also caused by life events that affect your hormone levels, such as pregnancy. However, there are some ways you can help reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.

Our cancer prevention recommendations include:

  • Don't drink alcohol 🍺
  • Be a healthy weight ⚖️
  • Be more active 🏋️
  • Breastfeed your baby (if you can) 👶

Liver cancer: rare but deadly

October is also Liver Cancer Awareness Month. Fortunately this cancer is rare in the UK, but cases are on the rise. Many people know that liver cancer risk is affected by alcohol. However, another key risk is obesity. We recently funded a grant looking at this issue. Raul Mendez at Spain’s Institute for Research in Biomedicine is looking at the DNA of liver tumours and hopes to develop novel ideas for treatment, as well as strategies to reduce liver cancer.

Bravo to WCRF's Sarah-Jane!

Our Corporate Partnerships Manager, also known as SJ, has had a busy few months, from competing in The Big Half & The Great North Run, to getting married the weekend before the London Marathon (which she also ran!). However, SJ didn’t let training stop her from cooking over 50 healthy sweet potato and chickpea curries for WCRF staff as a fundraiser! She raised £3,000 for WCRF and we’re so proud!
 > Could you fundraise for WCRF?

Curry recipes to impress

If SJ’s story has you in the mood for a good curry, we’re guaranteed to have a recipe you’ll love on the site. Whether you’re going to cook up your own fundraiser (maybe for World Gaming Day?) or are planning for a Friday night fakeaway, we’ve got recipes from Gobi aloo (cauliflower and potato curry) to Indian lentil soup and everything in between. If you try out a recipe don't forget to tag us on social!
