Hello Ellerslie!
Somehow, it is fall already and we’re nearing Halloween! The chill in the air is finally here after a summer that kept a strong hold longer than it usually would. I love the fall, and the colours that brighten up our community for a short time before we are covered in white.
This year, Diwali falls on October 24 and is part of a 5 day festival beginning October 22 lasting to October 26. To all those who celebrate, I wish that Diwali brings joy and prosperity for you and your family. Diwali is a celebration of light, the triumph of good over evil, and fireworks are often used to celebrate and mark this occasion so be prepared for some lights in the sky and maybe some loud noises outside.
We had a great Community League Day on September 17th, with a special visit from the folks at the Edmonton Police Service’s K9 unit and the Traffic Division’s motorcycle. We also had a visit from the folks at Edmonton Fire Rescue Services with a fire truck to look around in. This certainly piqued the interest of many community members, and it was so great to meet so many people on this day. A special thanks to Jennifer Ky from Discovery Toys for bringing the fun for our youngest Community Members, too!
School is back in full swing, and we’ve got students making their way to their schools all over our community, whether it’s by bus or by foot. Please keep an eye out for pedestrians while you are out and about on your commutes, and follow our posted speed limits to help keep everyone safe.
Fall also brings our Annual General Meeting. This meeting will be online on November 23 starting at 7pm. We will be updating you on the activities of the league, as well as holding elections for available positions! If you are interested in joining our Board and getting involved in your community, but want to know more information, please reach out to me at president@ellersliecommunityleague.com . I’d be happy to chat!
As always, thank you for being part of our community!

From the EPS website:
Social media used to be emails. Then chat rooms and computer messengers. Then cell phones became popular and text messaging was invented. One invention after the other, social media has expanded into countless mediums.
From the most popular sites: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, and Tinder, to the ones that probably just your children know about - Snapchat, Burn Book, Whisper, and Yik Yak, social media is evolving and expanding every day. It can be unnerving if you're trying to keep up with what your friends or children are doing online.
Social media doesn't have to be daunting or a realm of exploitation and bullying. All you need is the right information to make sure that you and your family know what really goes on online and how to use these sites safely.
- Everything is essentially permanent. Once you've sent something into the internet world, it may never leave. Even after you delete it. In a world where Print Screen is a button on your keyboard and screen shots on your phone take a mere second, when you post something online, it could be there forever.
- Research and fully understand the website or app you want to use before you use it. Some websites' terms of use include the transfer of rights of your content, or their third-party applications are given the ability to take your content. Read the terms of use BEFORE you sign up!
- Stay up-to-date with the medium's privacy settings. They will change, and hopefully the site will tell you when they change them.
- Use the privacy settings!!!!
- Be cautious of the information you provide in your personal profile. If you choose to share your private information, be sure to have your security settings so only the people you trust can see it. Social media profiles are a typical way for fraudsters to gain information about you and use against you for identity theft, romance scams, and more.
- Know who you're following and who follows you. Do you trust these people? Do you even know these people? Don't add someone you don't know, because you don't know what that person may do with the information you post.
- Be wary of what you post. Social media cannot dictate sarcasm or humour. What you post may be taken out of context. Follow the rule of "if you wouldn't say it to your grandma, don't say it online".
- Make sure it's okay that you post a photo of someone else. Not everyone wants their photo to be available to just anyone, so respect that opinion and ask first.
- Disable any geo-locating settings. On some apps (like dating apps that let you see who is in your area) provide your location even when you aren't active on the app. This could potentially reveal your workplace or home location.

Q: How can I get involved in my community?
We are always looking to include and engage as many voices from our community as possible. We currently have a few vacancies on the board, and you're always welcome to attend a (virtual) board meeting to meet your current board. We also welcome feedback, and can be reached at communications@ellersliecommunityleague.com
Q: Where do I find details about what's going on in the community?
Currently, the best place to find out what we're up to is via our facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/myellerslie or our Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ellersliecommunity
