Dear Neighbor, It is that time of year again when we begin to administer our annual leaf collection program. Public Works began leaf collection on Monday, October 31st and will continue through December 10, weather-permitting. I know, many might feel we are starting too early. Please understand, we are racing against mother nature to ensure the leaves are picked up substantially before the snow starts.
Please watch out for leaf signs in your area that indicate when crews will be in your neighborhood, check our interactive map periodically here and sign up for town service updates through EH Alerts at this link to keep up with our leaf progress.  | Get Vaccinated for Flu & COVID TODAY!An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help reduce the risk of getting flu and any of its potentially serious complications. For the best protection, everyone 6 months and older should get vaccinated annually. Generally, it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection. The East Hartford Health Department will be holding two public flu/COVID-19 booster clinics in November. The Fluzone high dose quadrivalent will be available for those 65 and over. The Flucelvax quadrivalent will be available for those 12 – 65 years, and the bivalent COVID-19 booster will be available for all ages 12 and up. Appointments are encouraged; walk-ins will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Residents are advised to bring their insurance and ID cards; however no one will be turned away. To speak with a public health nurse or to make an appointment, contact the East Hartford Health Department at 860-291-7324 (option 1).  | Quit Smoking This November November is National Smoking Cessation Month, and if you're a smoker, there's no better time to kick the habit. Did you know that quitting smoking can bring immediate health benefits, even if you already suffer from a smoking-related disease? Three months after quitting, your lung function and circulation will improve. After a year, your risk of heart disease will be cut in half. You'll also reduce your risk of cancer and the likelihood of heart attacks, strokes, and chronic lung disease. Smokers can and do quit smoking for good. In fact, since 2002 there have been more former smokers than current smokers. If you or a loved one smoke cigarettes and want to quit either for the first time or to make another attempt, do not give up, and know that you are not alone.

|  | Take Affordable Housing Survey The Town has begun the development of an Affordable Housing Plan, per the requirements outlined in Connecticut Statute 8-30j. To better inform the plan’s development, East Hartford residents are asked to complete a survey on the current housing situation. | |

In order to be able to vote in the general election, citizens must be registered voters. This ceremony will commemorate the veterans of East Hartford from that conflict as well as all veterans, living and deceased. | |

From 1865 to 1927, Rev. John James McCook was a presence on East Hartford’s Main Street as the pastor of St. John’s Episcopal Church, as much as he was on Hartford’s Main Street, where he resided as the patriarch of the Butler-McCook family. Learn more about this historic figure and his years at St. John’s, the historic Main Street church structure by renowned architect Edward Tuckerman Potter, and the McCook family’s continued connection to the parish, through artifacts and articles in the EHPL museum collection. | |

 | Creative Arts Open Hours: Threads of Assumption Artists Thursday, November 17, 6 – 7:30 PM How have we experienced gender bias in our culture, families, communities, and religious affiliations? Threads of Assumption artists, Martha, Sofie, U-Meleni, and Maria, invite the community to participate in the upcoming art exhibition of poetry, music, and weavings. Join the artists for a workshop on Thursday, November 17 from 6 – 7: 30 PM in the East Hartford Public Library Makerspace. Using provided looms, workshop attendees will make an individual yarn weaving using their own stories around gender bias as inspiration. While weaving and chatting with the artists, attendees can tell their stories to one another or write them down individually. The stories and weavings will be made anonymous and translated by both the artists and artificial intelligence for the exhibition at the library in April 2023. The workshop is free and open to the public. People of all genders are welcome. | |

America Recycles Day is celebrated on November 15, 2022. It began in 1997 to remind Americans of the importance of recycling year-round! The recycling rate in America has increased from less than 7 percent in 1960 to the current rate of 32 percent as a result of education about conservation of natural resources, protection of the environment and reuse of materials. The recycling efforts of communities and businesses throughout the United States have helped with this success and growth. However, we can all do more, especially in terms of RECYCLING CLEAN! RECYCLING CLEAN means careful placement of items in your recycling blue carts. Please be thoughtful about what you place in the blue cart: when in doubt, throw it out in your green trash cart. Thanksgiving is around the corner and we will all be cooking, baking, eating and drinking. With more than 50 million turkeys consumed each Thanksgiving, it is important to know what to do with those turkey trays and other items such as pie tins, cranberry cans, soup cans, beverage bottles (glass, plastic, aluminum), plastic wrap & foil. In fact, not all items are recyclable if they are not CLEAN. Do not recycle plastic wrap, soiled paper plates, soiled napkins, soiled aluminum foil, food waste, black plastic food containers, styrofoam or plastic silverware. Put these items in your trash cart. Remember, East Hartford Recycles Clean! |

 | Service Learning Opportunity The East Hartford Youth Services Department has an upcoming service learning opportunity for high school youth. Participants must live in East Hartford but can attend any high school be it in the district or not. This is a chance to be a part of the election process. Students will be at Town Hall (740 Main Street) on Election Day: November 8, 2022. They will help voters to get registered. Students will also help answer questions that voters might have. Register by November 1, 2022. | |

 | Message from the Fire Chief Cold weather is fast approaching! Did you know that heating appliances are the second leading cause of home fires and the third leading cause of residential fire deaths? As we transition into the cold weather months, it is important to remember some fire safety tips to keep you and your family safe. First and foremost, use approved heating devices. Space heaters can be used to help assist in areas of your home that may be cooler than others, but they should not be used exclusively to heat your home. In fact, 81% of heating fire deaths are attributed to a space heater. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association to stay safe while using space heaters: Keep anything that can burn at least 3’ from all heating appliances. Have a 3’ “kid-free” zone around space heaters to prevent burns and tipping. Consult a licensed professional if questions arise over heating appliances. Never leave a portable heater unattended. Use only listed and rated equipment and NEVER use extension cords. Inspect cords regularly for cracks or fraying. Test your smoke alarms twice a month.

The Town of East Hartford once again partnered with the Connecticut River Valley Chamber of Commerce and Pratt and Whitney to bring the much-loved Trunk or Treat back to the Pratt and Whitney’s Runway. The event took place on Sunday, October 30 bringing about 500 families to the airfield for candy, Halloween spirit and fun. |
