What's on

Juicy juicy mango season is here! As is the season for many other fruits. Join us Saturday and bring along your favourite mango and pawpaw recipes to share with others.  Don't forget any excess of veg, fruit, cuttings and seeds you have to share.

Don't miss the Incredible Edible Broome AGM. Join us at 9am on Saturday 3rd December at Broome CIRCLE. There'll be a presentation on the year gone by, thoughts on the future and a very exciting book launch!

Jump on our website or come early to sign up as a member (if you aren't already).

Morning tea / brunch provided.

We will be looking for a few new members for our committee too. Please get in touch if you'd like to find out more.
We are so very excited to be launching this special book, very soon. It's been a few years in the making.  It was all made possible through a vision from Brendan Renkin, the fabulous interview and writing skills of Eliza Lockyer and funding from the Lions Club of Broome and Water Corporation's Kimberley Community Grants Scheme as well as a Shire of Broome Community Grant.

Inside the book we have interviews with six local gardeners, as well as lots of content on local climate, pests, water wise tips, how to make your own compost and worm farms, where to find information on bush foods and much more. It's a wealth of local knowledge, and we look forward to sharing it with the community.

Get a sneak peak of the book at the AGM and stay tuned for an upcoming launch very soon after!

October Share re-cap

We had a great wet season Fresh Food Share with Monique Ellis on Saturday 1st October. We meet on the first Saturday of each month to share knowledge, produce, food and tips. Join us at our next one, on November 5, where we look at all the things you can do with mangoes and pawpaws.

Here’s some hot tips from our chat with Mon, to get your garden ready for the wet season:

  • Remove tomatoes and take them to the tip to prevent disease in your garden. Do not compost them.
  • Crop rotation is a must.
  • Plant nitrogen fixing plants like mung bean and peanuts.
  • Clean out chicken pen and add it to your garden, mulch or plant a green, protective mulch like sweet potatoes.
  • Collect seed, dry it and store in a cool dry place for the next growing season.
  • Fertilise you fruit trees with a high potassium fertiliser to encourage flowers and fruit. Prune lower and internal branches for good airflow and to prevent pest and disease.
  • Best fruit trees to grow in Broome are: mango, paw paw, banana and mulberries.

If you are not going to plant out your vegetable garden over the wet season, turn off your retic, add chicken poo, compost and mulch to keep soil healthy while resting. The very best tip was to slow down! Take your time, and only do a few small jobs here and there. These will add up to a big impact overall.
