Embrace the Grace - Weekly Reflection
A little game parents play with their young children goes something like this: the child asks mom or dad, “How much do you love me?” The parent stretches out their adult arms as wide as possible and tells the child, “I love you this much.”
It is a cute game that can elicit some laughs from both parent and child. But it is also an important game that helps the child know he or she is loved.
Adults need reminding, too. Life beats us up, scars us, and wounds us. Other human beings let us down. We let other people down. There is a chance, as we come of age, that the pedestal we placed our mom and dad on crumbled by way of human dysfunction. The reality is … something is not as it should be.
We need look no further than the crucifix for a reminder that God has a plan. We see the Son of God and Son of man nailed to a cross. Why? Because love does such things. Love goes as far as to die so that others might have life. Those extended arms of Jesus on the cross shout to us through the centuries, “I love you THIS much.”
There is enough room inside those salvific blood-stained arms for every human person who ever lived. Yes, including you. No need for Jesus to “do it again.” Once was enough for all humankind.
How are you, today, responding to so great a love?
Fr. Bob
